Spartans Comeback Spoiled in Extras by Gettysburg

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan softball team came up short in a 14-11 extra-inning slugfest with Gettysburg at home on Tuesday. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was halted after four innings due to darkness following the near three-hour game one marathon. York held a 6-1 lead in game two before the contest was suspended.

The Spartans fought back from a six-run deficit and forced the game into extra-innings on an Emma Wade grand slam in the seventh inning. After the two teams traded runs in the eighth, the Bullets scored five in the ninth which proved to be too much for the Spartans to overcome.

How It Happened
  • The Bullets broke open a 6-0 lead in the third on an Allegra DeCandia three-run home run.
  • York got on the board in the fourth with an Alexis McDonaugh RBI single which scored Gretchen Barstad from second. The Bullets got one back in the top of the fifth to swell their lead back up to six.
  • The Spartans trailed by five heading into the bottom of the seventh and mounted a miraculous comeback to force the game into extras. Barstad cut the deficit to four as she drove in Morgan Sauers with the bases loaded. Daphney Adams reached on a fielder's choice which reloaded the bases and set the table for Emm Wade who tied the game up  with her second grand slam in as many days and third this season.
  • As the game moved to international tiebreaker rules, each team scored in the eighth which forced another frame. In the ninth, the Bullets scored all five of their runs with two outs as they racked up five hits and received aid with two Spartan errors. York made a late push in the bottom half with two runs on RBI-doubles by Wade and Bri McKeown, but it was not enough as Gettysburg escaped victorious.

Up Next
The Spartans continue their home stand Saturday with a Commonwealth doubleheader against Messiah.
