Men's Golf Finishes Tenth at Loaded Hershey Cup

Gavin Ganter leads the Spartan with a fourth place finish

HERSHEY, PA – The York College men's golf squad finished tenth of 16 teams at the loaded Hershey Cup on Monday at Hershey Country Club.

The Spartans shot a two-day total of 619 as they fired a 316 on Sunday followed by a 303 on Monday. Wittenberg won the team title with a score of 599 as they shot 301 and 298. They edged the University of Rochester by three strokes while Franklin & Marshall finished third at 605. Gettysburg placed fourth at 611 while NYU and McDaniel finished tied for fifth at 614.

The Spartans were led by junior Gavin Ganter as he finished in a tie for fourth in the 87-player field. Ganter finished with a two-day total of 147 as he was three strokes back of individual champion JF Aber from Wittenberg. Ganter shot a three-over par 74 on Sunday and then improved by a stroke with a 73 on Monday.

In Ganter's first round he shot a 40 on the front and then played great on the back nine with a one-under 34. Ganter had a birdie and an eagle on his back nine. He shot a 38 on his Monday front nine and then was also on fire with an even-par 35 on his second nine.

Junior Jason Velez finished tied for 21st with a two-day total of 152. Velez shot matching 76's for his two rounds. In round one, Velez shot 40 on the front and rebounded with a 36 on the back. In round two, Velez had three birdies on the front as he shot 38 followed by a 38 on the back.

Sophomore Jacob Fripp was York's next finisher as he tied for 38th with a tournament score of 156. Fripp shot 81 on Sunday but rebounded nicely on Monday with a 75. On Sunday, Fripp shot 40 on the front and 41 on the back. On Monday, he opened his round with a triple but had two birdies to shoot 37 on the front. He carded a 38 on the back to shoot his 75.

Matthew Salter was York's fourth scorer for the tournament as he tied for 61st with a two-day total of 164. Salter shot 85 on Sunday and then made a six-shot improvement on Monday with a 79. Sophomore Nate Myers was York's fifth tournament participant as he finished tied for 73rd as he concluded the tournament with a score of 170. Myers shot 87 on Sunday followed by an 83 on Monday.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 20 when they head to the Emory Invitational at Cherokee Run Golf Club in Coyers, Georgia. Saturday's round is set for 12:00 pm start while Sunday's round two is set for a 10:00 am start.
