FREDERICKSBURG, Pa. - The 14th-ranked York women's lacrosse team used a big first half run to seal a 13-6 victory at Mary Washington on Sunday.

The Spartans put the game away early with an 8-0 second quarter run which resulted in a 10-1 halftime lead that proved to be insurmountable for the Eagles.

How It Happened
Mary Washington netted the first goal a little over a minute after the first draw and that lead stood for nearly nine minutes. The Eagles had several chances to extend the lead during that nine-minute stretch, but their failure to capitalize resulted in a 28-minute scoring drought and a nine-goal deficit at halftime.

Gianna Huet put York on the board with 5:13 left in the first quarter and Juliana Silvernale pumped in another on the woman-up advantage to put York in front, 2-1. The Spartans opened the second quarter fast and furious with four goals in the first five minutes by four different scorers which sparked an 8-0 second quarter run.

Zoe Kluegel and Sydney Mentzer each tallied twice during York's 8-0 run and Huet also finished  with a pair of tallies in the first half. The Spartans out-shot the Eagles 20-10 in the first half with just four turnovers and owned an 8-5 edge in draw controls.

The Eagles flipped the script in the third quarter and out-scored the Spartans, 4-0, to cut the York lead to five. Bridget Crowley scored the first two goals in the third while UMW goalie Cailyn Tripp stopped all four of York's shots put on target in the quarter.

The Spartans forced turnovers on each of UMW's first two possessions of the first half before the Eagles were charged with a yellow card. The card led to a York woman-up goal by Sofie Steel and Huet pumped in another tally 48 seconds later to put the Spartans ahead, 12-5, with 10:03 remaining.

The York defense posted stops on the next three Eagle possessions before Kate Feldman delivered the dagger with 5:10 left as the Spartans went up by eight.
