Facciponti’s Banner Day Powers Spartans to Regular Season Title

Spartans claim third-straight regular season Commonwealth crown

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan men's lacrosse program captured their third-straight regular season Commonwealth crown in an entertaining 21-19 victory over Messiah at Kinsley Field on Saturday.

Spartan faceoff specialist Vinny Facciponti ultimately made the difference in the closely contested contest with a program-record 33 faceoff wins (33-for-39) to go along with a record-tying 27 ground balls. Collectively, the Spartan faceoff unit went 37-for-44 which set a new program record for faceoff wins in a single game.

Team Records
Hood 8-8 (2-4 MACC)
(RV) York 10-7 (7-0 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans found themselves in a dogfight early as they swapped goals with Messiah three times before the Falcons netted the first back-to-back goals of the game to take a 4-3 lead with  5:17 left in the first quarter. The two teams ended the quarter on a furious pace as they combined to average a goal per minute with three in the final minute. Will Harnick had the final tally of the quarter as he tied the game up, 6-6, with 34 seconds left.

The two teams continued to go back-and-forth as the second quarter began, but York's success  at the faceoff X began to wear the Falcons down as the Spartans ripped off five unanswered to take a 12-8 lead with 5:09 left before halftime. Eric Kaplan and Jack Grayson helped fuel the run as they each netted goals on an extended Spartan power play. Despite giving up eight goals and losing all 13 faceoffs in the quarter, the Falcons still managed to keep the game close at the break as they trailed by four (14-10) at halftime.

The Spartans maintained their edge throughout the third quarter and Grayson gave York the largest lead of the game (19-13) late in the period.

After falling behind by six, the Falcons did not shy away and went on to out-score the Spartans 4-1 from late in the third to midway through the fourth quarter cut the York lead to three (20-17) with 7:50 left to play. Falcon goalie Jourdain Algarin fueled the Messiah comeback with six fourth-quarter saves, but it was the lack of production at faceoff which ultimately led to Messiah's demise. After winning four faceoffs in the first quarter, the Falcons only mustered up three more wins in the final three quarters which prevented them from matching the Spartans goal for goal.

Up Next
The Spartans return home on Wednesday to host Eastern in a Commonwealth semifinal round matchup slated for 7 p.m.
