Spartans Upended by Eastern in Commonwealth Semifinal

YORK, Pa. - The top-seeded Spartan men's lacrosse team suffered a stunning season-ending loss to fourth-seeded Eastern, 11-10, Wednesday night in a Commonwealth semifinal round matchup at Kinsley Field.

Despite losing most statistical categories on the night and held to season-lows in shots (30) and faceoff wins (4), the Eagles played stingy defense and kept their turnovers under 20 as they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Commonwealth men's lacrosse postseason history.

How It Happened
The two teams traded goals twice to start the game before the Spartans ended the quarter on a three-goal run to take a 5-2 edge which ended up being the largest lead of the game. Davis Fisher scored twice for York during the opening quarter and Nicholas Fanelli led Eastern with a pair of points.

Despite winning just one faceoff, the Eagles flipped the script in the second quarter and ended the period on a three-goal run of their own to tie the score at six all at halftime. The Spartans struggled mightily on offense throughout the quarter as they turned the ball over eight times and were turned away four times by Eastern goalie Ethan Myers.

Blake Morton netted the first goal of the third quarter with 9:16 left which snapped a near 15-minute scoreless drought by York and put the Green and White ahead, 7-6. The Spartans had plenty more opportunities to score and extend the lead in the quarter as they won all five faceoffs, but they failed to capitalize and the Eagles scored with five seconds left to tie the game up, 8-8, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagle defense posted two stops to start the fourth quarter and then scored a pair of consecutive goals 34 seconds apart to take a 10-8 lead with 9:35 left to play which turned up the pressure on York. The Spartans responded on their ensuing possession with a Jack Grayson tally and added a second-consecutive goal two minutes later with a Harnick man-up tally as the game stood tied, 10-10, with 6:05 left to play.

York went on to win the next faceoff, but came up empty on back-to-back possessions as Eastern forced the Spartans into their second shot clock violation of the quarter with 1:48 left. The Eagles turned their great defensive play into offense as Nick Litzenberger stung the back of the net with 59 seconds left to put his squad up by one.

The Eastern bench and fans held their collective breath as York won the ensuing faceoff and went to work offensively. The Spartans managed to get off three shots, with only one on target and the final shot was deflected out of bounds with possession awarded to Eastern with two seconds remaining which sealed the upset win.
