Spartan Men Finish Stay at Highly Competitive Emory Invite

Gavin Ganter led the Spartans with a 23rd place finish

COYERS, GEORGIA – The York College men's golf squad concluded their stay at the Emory Spring Invitational in Coyers, Georgia this weekend.

The three round event was held at Cherokee Run Golf Club in Coyers, Georgia. The Spartans finished eighth of 10 teams at the event as they shot a three-round total of 946. York fired a 315 in round one and then shot 306 during round two on Saturday. The Spartans closed out their stay with a 325 on Sunday.

Washington & Lee and Emory tied for the team title as they both shot 900. Washington & Lee shot four strokes better on Sunday to catch the host Eagles. Averett placed third at 912 while Pomona-Pitzer and Mississippi University of Women tied for fourth at 922.

Junior Gavin Ganter led the way for the Green and White as he tied for 23rd with a three round score of 234. Ganter was in the top five after day one as he shot 77 and 73 in the first two rounds. He then shot 84 on Sunday for his final round to finish 13 shots back of individual winner John Keba from Averett as he shot 221 for the tournament.

Fellow junior Jason Velez was York's second scorer as he placed 36th overall with a score of 238. Velez shot 81 in round one, 76 in round two and another 81 in round three. He was five shots out of a top 20 finish in the loaded field.

Jacob Fripp was York's third scorer as he tied for 37th with a tournament total of 239. Fripp notched a 74 in round one, an 84 in round two and finished the tournament with an 81. Junior Matthew Salter was three strokes back of Fripp as he tied for 43rd. Salter carded an opening round 83 followed by a second round 77. He completed the tournament with an 82 on Sunday.

Bennett Elgin and Nate Myers were the final two Spartans who participated in the tournament. The duo tied for 61st with a score of 251. Elgin shot 90 in round one and then improved 10 strokes in round two with an 80. He concluded his tournament stay with an 81 on Sunday. Myers shot 86 in round one, 83 in round two and 82 in round three.

The tournament was York's final tune up before next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament at Golden Oaks in Fleetwood, PA. The two round tournament kicks off on Saturday with the final round coming on Sunday. The Spartans are looking to capture their first tournament title since 2021 when they won the title in their first year in the Commonwealth.
