Late Rally Not Enough as Spartans Fall at Dickinson

The Spartans rallied late but were unable to overcome Dickinson's early lead.

CARLISLE, PA – The York College baseball team dropped their seventh straight as they fell to Dickinson 7-4 in non-conference action on a cool Sunday afternoon in Carlisle, PA.
The Red Devils improve to 24-8 overall while the Spartans are now 17-15.

How It Happened
• After a quiet first inning, the Dickinson got their offense cranked up in the second. After a ground out to lead off the inning, the Red Devils drew back-to-back walks followed by a single to load the bases with one out. Kyle Bailey got Dickinson on the board with an RBI single. Luke Gartland drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0. Kenny Tagliaren was hit by a pitch for an RBI the hard way making it 3-0. The Spartans got a second out on a strikeout but the pitch was wild, allowing the runner to score from third for the 4-0 lead. The Red Devils got their four runs on a mere two hits with three walks and a hit by pitch.
• The Red Devils tacked on an unearned run in the third to make it 5-0. York loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and scored a run when Robby Elzinga was hit by a pitch. The Red Devils got out of the frame with a double play as the Spartans squandered a great chance at a big inning.
• Dickinson pushed their lead to 7-1 in the fifth as they got a walk, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch followed by a second wild pitch that scored a run. Josh Markey capped the Dickinson scoring with an RBI single as they led by six.
• The Spartans tried to make it interesting in the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out. Joe Urban scored a run with a sacrifice fly. After a wild pitched moved runners up to second and third, Jacob Deimling ripped a two-run double down the right field line to make it 7-4. Lucas Prendergast singled but the Red Devils went to the bullpen and Brian Riley got the final out of the game to earn the save.

The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak against Dickinson as York is now 9-2 all-time against the Red Devils ... York has now lost 11 of their last 13 games … the Spartans were 1-for-13 against left-handed pitchers in the game … the Spartans did get six of their nine lead-off hitters on base to led off an inning in the game … York had a pair of two-out RBI in the game as they now have 101 for the campaign … York was 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position in the game … York has outscored their opponents 28-8 in the ninth inning and 16-9 in the eighth … York is 4-11 when their opponent scores first and now 1-13 when being out-hit in a game … Chris Betler recorded his team-high 20th multi-hit game of the year as he had a pair of knocks in the loss … senior Connor Pickle had his 11 game hit streak snapped as he was 0-for-1 but he was on base three times via three hit by pitches … Betler extended his hit streak to eight, the longest current streak on the squad … Jacob Deimling registered his first multiple RBI game as he drove in two on Sunday … Lucas Prendergast extended his reached base streak to 22 while Betler's streak is now at 21 … Pickle's reached base streak is at 12 while Robby Elzinga is at 11 straight games.
