Spartan Senior Day Spoiled by Hood with Commonwealth Sweep

The Spartans have lost six straight as a tough month of April continues

YORK, PA – The York College baseball team continued their rough month of April as the Spartans were swept in a key MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on a sunny Saturday in York. The Blazers slipped by the Spartans 3-2 in the opener and then rolled past the Green and White 11-6 in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 2-10 in the month of April as they have lost six straight.
York is now 17-14 overall and 9-9 in the league while the Blazers have won six of their last seven as they improve to 19-14 overall and 10-8 in the Commonwealth. Hood has passed the Spartans for third place in the league as there is one more weekend series left in the conference schedule.

How It Happened
• The Blazers jumped out to a very early lead as Keegan Brennan opened the game with a lead off home run to left center on a 3-2 pitch for the 1-0 lead. Hood made it 2-0 in the third as Richard Kershow had a solo homer to right, his first home run of the year.
• The Spartans got on the board in the third as Brett DeWees was hit by a pitch with one out. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Gabe Trevena single to right to get on the board.
• Hood tacked on a third run in the fourth as Kershow had a sacrifice fly to put the Blazers up 3-1. The Spartans made it interesting in the seventh as Jacob Deimling ripped a pinch-hit single with one out in the frame. He moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Trevena double to right center, cutting the Hood lead to 3-2. However, the Spartans wouldn't be able to get Trevena across the plate as they suffered the one run loss.
• Junior Brandon Purdy took the loss despite tossing a complete game. Purdy allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in his seven innings of work.

The Blazers loaded the bases before Stephen Sommer hit a line drive home run that just cleared the 16-foot wall in right as the Blazers took a 6-1 lead. The Blazers closed out the inning with an unearned run.
• Hood scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to push the lead to 9-1. Hood scored a single run in the top of the eighth before York scored a pair in the bottom of the frame. Michael Tinneny homered in the eighth while Ryan Niedzialkowski walked with the bases loaded to drive home a run.
