OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College Spartans downed the Stevenson University Mustangs 15-5 in a battle of MAC Commonwealth unbeatens on Wednesday night in Owings Mills, Maryland.
The Spartans jumped on the Mustangs early and never let up as they rolled to the ten-goal win.
The Spartans improve to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the league as they have won five straight. The Mustangs fall to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
How It Happened
• The Spartans forged out to an early 3-0 lead but the first goal didn't come until there was 8:25 left in the quarter.
Zoe Kluegel opened the scoring with an unassisted tally.
Gianna Huet scored less than a minute later to push the lead to 2-0. Kluegel struck again with 4:16 left in the quarter for the three goal Spartan margin.
• The Mustangs answered Kluegel's second goal with a tally just 19 seconds later. However, the Spartans responded 47 seconds later as
Madison Kurland scored off a
Krista Yarusso pass for the 4-1 lead.
Natalie Neiman made it 5-1 after one quarter of play.
• The teams alternated the first five goals of the second quarter as York got goals from Kluegel, Neiman and Yarusso to take an 8-3 lead with 2:12 left in the half. Yarusso scored again and Klugel notched her fourth goal of the half as York led 10-3 at the break.
• The Spartan defense stepped up in the third quarter as the Green and White kept the Mustangs off the board. Goalie
Bella Garabo made four saves in the quarter for the Green and White. The Spartans got goals from Kurland and
Sofie Steel as the York lead grew to 12-3.
• Stevenson opened the fourth quarter scoring but the Spartans put the game away with three straight goals in the middle of the fourth.
Kate Walsh, Kluegel, and Huet notched tallies for York as the lead was 15-4 with 5:16 left in the game. The Mustangs got the final goal of the game to provide for York's final 15-5 margin of victory.
