Spartans Outlast Denison to Get Back in Win Column

GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Spartan men's lacrosse team snapped a five-game skid with a 10-9 road win at Denison on Friday.

After a back-and-forth battle through most of three quarters, the Spartans held the Big Red to just one goal in the final 24 minutes, while York scored three times during that span to clinch the much-needed victory.

(RV) York 3-6
(RV) Denison 4-5

How It Happened
The Spartans and Big Red traded runs to start the game with York opening the game with three-straight goals through the first six minutes. The Spartan man-up got things started as Eric Kaplan assisted Davis Fisher before Coleton Mahorney and Will Harnick pumped in two more for the Green and White.

The York offense went silent for the next 19 minutes and Denison took full advantage with four-straight tallies to take a 4-3 lead with 7:41 left in the second quarter. Luke Fisher fueled the Big Red's run with a pair of goals during that span.

The two sides traded blows twice before the end of the second quarter as Denison took a 6-5 lead into halftime. Harnick scored both goals for York in the second as he ended the first half with three. Michael Cassidy netted the final two for Denison as he and Fisher tied for the team with two each at the break.

York came out of the halftime break and netted the equalizer 13 seconds into the third quarter as Vinny Facciponti set up Zach Rutledge for a quick-strike goal. Three minutes later, Harnick gave the Spartans their first lead since the first quarter as he rang up his fourth tally of the day. The lead did not last long as Fisher tied it up, 7-7, with his third goal of the day on Denison's very next possession and the Big Red went back out in front two minutes later on a Nate Kay man-up tally with 8:59 left in the third quarter.

Denison went on to turn the ball over on six of their final seven possessions of the third quarter which sparked a stretch of 21 minutes without a Big Red goal which spanned nearly the full length of the fourth quarter until Tommy Quinson scored with 2:43 left. During that time, the Spartan defense racked up six caused turnovers while goalie Nash Womack posted four saves.

The Spartans took full advantage of Denison's offensive struggles down the stretch and racked up three-straight goals from the end of the third through the early part of the fourth quarter to retake the lead for good. Harnick capped off a stellar performance with the eventual game-winning goal with 11:17 to play to bring his total to five for the day.
