Tough Second Quarter Sinks Spartans at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A 5-0 second quarter run for Gettysburg gave the Bullets the momentum they needed to secure a 15-10 home victory over the York men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening.

Gettysburg's big second quarter performance fueled a 7-0 run and a near 23-minute scoring drought for the Spartans which turned a 3-3 first quarter tie into a 10-3 third quarter Bullet lead.

How It Happened
After a turnover laden opening two minutes for both sides, the Bullets bucked the trend with back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead five minutes into the contest. With just over five minutes left in the first quarter, the pace picked up drastically as the two teams combined for four goals in less than two minutes. The Spartans out-scored the Bullets, 3-1, during that span with tallies from Jackson Shields, Vinny Facciponti and Davis Fisher as the game stood knotted up, 3-3, heading into the second period.

The second quarter belonged strictly to the Bullets as they used a 5-0 run to open up an 8-3 halftime lead. Quinton Mather and Patrick Maroney each netted a pair to lead scoring effort for Gettysburg in the second. The Spartans aided Gettysburg's run by committing a game-high seven turnovers in the second which canceled out their 5-for-6 performance at the faceoff dot in the quarter. Additionally, Bullet goalie Chase Morgan kept the Spartans at bay with four saves in the second quarter as he faced a total of seven shots.

The Bullets extended their run into the third quarter and took a 10-3 lead on Jack Dunleavy's 23rd tally of the season with 11:36 left in the third. Fifty seconds later, Garrett Keogh snapped a near 23-minute Spartan scoring drought and sparked a three-goal York run Will Harnick tallying twice to cut Gettysburg lead to four with 3:15 left in the third. The momentum York built up was quickly wiped out as the Bullets tacked on three-straight goals to end the third quarter and push the lead back up to seven heading into the fourth.

The Spartans did not hang their heads and put up a fight throughout the fourth quarter. Zach Mentzer and Harnick tallied back-to-back quick goals within the first four minutes, but six minutes elapsed before Brent Blackmon tallied a third-straight goal for York and the game had slipped away at that point. York ended the fourth quarter with a 4-2 scoring advantage on a 7-0 edge in faceoffs and an 11-5 edge in ground balls.
