#14 Spartans Down #17 Captains in Wednesday Clash

The Spartans outscored CNU 15-10 to earn the win in a battle of nationally ranked squads

YORK, PA – In another battle against a nationally ranked squad, the York College women's team earned a 15-10 win over #17 Christopher Newport University on a damp Wednesday in York.
The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Green and White.
The Spartans improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 at home. The Captains fall to 8-3 overall as they had their two-game win streak snapped. The loss drops the Captains to 2-1 against nationally ranked teams.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans opened the day's scoring as sophomore Krista Yarusso scored just 2:37 into the game, giving York the early advantage. The Captains answered with consecutive goals as they took a 2-1 lead with 7:43 left in the first. Syd Guidi and Brookelyn Morrison tallied the goals for the Captains.
• The Green and White answered emphatically with four straight goals to end the first quarter. Sydney Mentzer started the run with an unassisted goal at the 7:10 mark. Natalie Neiman scored 45 seconds later on a free position shot to put York up 3-2. Mentzer combined with Neiman for York's fourth goal and then Mentzer completed the hat trick with a goal off a pass from Gianna Huet with 1:35 left in the quarter.
• The Spartans made it a six-goal run at the start of the second with two more goals, pushing the lead to 7-2. Zoe Kluegel scored off a pass from Madison Kurland a mere 59 seconds into the quarter. Kurland then notched her 14th goal of the year at the 11:24 mark. Guidi ended the Spartan run with her second goal of the game. Kluegel answered that goal with her second goal of the game with just 13 seconds left in the half as the Green and White took an 8-3 lead to the break.
• The third quarter was a big offensive one for both teams. The Captains opened the third with goals from Guidi and Page Henry, slicing the Spartan lead to 8-5. York answered with three straight goals as Jen Campbell, Heut, and Sofie Steel tallied their goals in a span of 3:11 pushing the lead to 11-5. The Captains answered with two goals to cap the third quarter scoring. Kelsey Winters and Kate Lamendola found the back of the cage for CNU.
• Mentzer kicked off the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the game, finishing a free position chance 50 seconds into the quarter. The Captains won the ensuing draw and converted the possession into a Henry goal 32 seconds after the Mentzer tally. Mentzer kept her great day going with her career-high tying fifth goal of the day, converting another free position chance. The Spartan offense kept humming as Huet recorded the Spartans' 14th goal of the game with her second goal of the game at the 10:47 mark. Kate Walsh closed out the Spartan scoring with her fourth goal of the year with 9:39 left in the game.
• The Captains tallied two goals over the final 3:16 to provide for the final 15-10 Spartan margin of victory.

The Spartans out-shot the Captains 33-16 overall and 22-15 in shots on goal … both teams registered 15 ground balls … CNU had 14 turnovers while York had 13 … the Spartans had seven caused turnovers while the Captains had three … York went 17-for-18 on the clear while CNU was 18-for-20 … CNU had seven saves to six for the Green and White … York went a dominating 20-for-29 in draw controls in the game … York was 3-for-5 in free position shots while CNU was 2-for-3.

The Spartans improve to 10-0 all-time against the Captains including 5-0 at Kinsley Field … York has out-scored CNU 145-81 in the all-time series … the 15-10 score matches the score of the first match up between the two programs on April 19, 2014 … the 15 goals were the second highest total of the year, one behind the 16 the Spartans scored on March 16 against Washington (Md.) … York's 33 shots were their second highest total of the year … York continues to be good on free position shots as York was 3-for-5 in the game and are now 17-for-33 (51.5%) for the year … York had 13 turnovers which was just one above their season low which came in their game at Stevens … sophomore Sydney Mentzer had another big day as she tied her career-high with five goals on eight shots … she added six draw controls and a ground ball as she was 2-for-2 in free position shots … Gianna Huet and Natalie Neiman each added three points … Huet had two goals and an assist while she also had a ground ball and a draw control … Neiman had a goal and two assists as she was 1-for-1 on the free position … grad senior Christina Vendelis registered a career-high eight draws to go along with one ground ball in the win … senior Madison Kurland had another all-around game with a goal, an assist, two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls … grad goalie Bella Garabo tied a career-high with seven ground balls to go along with six saves and a caused turnover … the win was Garabo's 30th career victory … the 30 wins are third in school history, one back of Anne Fuestle's 31 wins and 14 back of Charlotte Wright's school record of 44 … the 15 goals allowed by the Captains are a season-high as they had allowed only one other team to get into double digits (10 vs. Washington and Lee) ... all eight Spartan games have come against teams ranked in the IWLCA national rankings or teams receving votes.

The Spartans head back out on the road on Saturday with a trip to Salisbury University to face the #4 Sea Gulls. First draw from Salisbury is set for 1:00 pm.
