Wade’s Homers Lifts Spartans to Sunday Split with Eastern

YORK, Pa. - Emma Wade lifted the Spartans to a game two win and a conference doubleheader split with a pair of home runs on Sunday against Eastern.

Team Records
Eastern 14-3 (3-1 MACC)
York 12-5 (3-1 MACC)

GAME 1
Eastern 4, York 2

Pitchers of Record
WP: Danika Barthol (6-1)
LP: Natalie Rietema (4-4)

How It Happened
Neither team had much offense cooking until the fourth inning and Eastern threatened first with runners on second and third. The Spartans managed to work out of the jam as Natalie Rietema got Kelci Cost to pop up to Bri McKeown for the final out of the inning to leave both runners stranded.

The Spartans turned their defense into offense in the bottom half of the fourth and took a 2-0 lead with the first runs of the game. Alexis McDonaugh came through with a clutch two-out sacrifice fly to right field which scored Gretchen Barstad from third. Jordyn Woodling hustled around from second and forced an errant throw up the line by Eastern right fielder Mackenzie Laub which allowed Woodling to reach home safely on the play. Eastern would go on to retire the very next batter with a ground out to keep the damage to a minimum.

After an uneventful fifth inning, the Eagle offense made noise in the sixth with four runs on four hits which ultimately sealed their come-from-behind victory. The first five Eastern batters reached base safely with a walk followed by four-straight hits, highlighted by a two-run double Jania Long which gave EU the lead. Kaci Noonan followed Long with a pinch-hit RBI single to extend the lead to two runs.

The Spartans left a runner stranded in the sixth as Barstad reached base with a double, but then went down in order in the seventh to surrender the game one win to Eastern.

Danika Barthol picked up the win for Eastern and improved to 6-1 on the season as she allowed just two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

GAME 2
York 5, Eastern 3

Pitchers of Record
WP: Kyrsten Coppage (8-1)
LP: Jania Long (5-1)
S: Gretchen Barstad (1)

How It Happened
The Spartans held the Eagles scoreless through four frames thanks in large part to a successful relay throw home from Rylee Dreyer in center to Daphney Adams to punch out Kaci Noonan for the final out of the inning.

Emma Wade broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-run blast to straightaway center for her fifth homer of the season. York had a chance to tack on more with less than two outs, but the Eagle defense retired two of the next three Spartan batters to work out of the inning without allowing any more damage.

The Eagles used the long ball as well and tied the game up in the sixth as Sydney Ostolaza poked her fourth dinger of the season over the left center fence. Ostolaza's homer came with no outs so Eastern remained on the hunt for more and received another run on a Sophie Rollins RBI-triple which gave her team a 3-2 edge through the top half of the sixth.

The Eastern lead did not last long as Wade once again came through with a towering three-run blast to left center field to put York ahead 5-3.

Gretchen Barstad came in to close out the seventh and retired the Eastern lineup in order to seal the win and pick up her first save of the season. Kyrsten Coppage earned her team-leading eighth win of the season as she scattered six hits and surrendered three runs through 6.0 innings.
