#17 Spartans Stumble at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. - A fourth-quarter surge proved too little too late as the 17th-ranked Spartan men's lacrosse team came up short in a 11-9 loss at Grove City on Saturday.

The Wolverines took control of the game with a 4-0 run combined with a near 15-minute scoreless drought by York which both spanned from the third to fourth quarter. The Spartans rallied back and cut the deficit to within two with under five minutes to play, but then came up empty on their next four-straight possessions which sealed their fate.

How It Happened
The Spartans came out firing and racked up a 13-6 shot margin in the first quarter, but only produced a pair of tallies as Jack Grayson and Coleton Mahorney each found the back of the net while the game stood even, 2-2, at the end one quarter of play. Grove City goalie Danny Stone kept the Spartans at bay with five first quarter saves to start the day.

The Wolverines had the upper-hand offensively in the second quarter as they owned a 14-4 shot margin which led to a 3-1 edge in goals for the period as they took a 5-3 halftime lead. Of those 14 shots for Grove City, seven found their way on target as Spartan netminder Nash Womack notched four saves in the second quarter to keep the damage to a minimum.

York netted the first two goals of the third quarter as Grayson and Michael Russo pulled the Spartans even (5-5) with 10:12 left to play in the period. The momentum was short-lived as the Wolverines went on to win the remaining five faceoffs in the quarter and owned a 6-1 margin overall for the period.

Grove City scored the last two goals of the third quarter and went on to score the first two of the fourth quarter which put the Wolverines out in front, 10-6, with 9:39 left to play. The Grove defense then held the Spartans scoreless for nearly three more additional minutes until a Will Harnick tally with 6:55 left snapped a 15-minute drought for the Green and White. During that span, the Spartans racked up 16 total shots with eight being turned away by Stone and three hitting a post.

The Spartans netted their second set of back-to-back goals of the half when Jake Jackson netted his second tally of the season and cut Grove City lead to two with 4:56 left to play. Shortly after, the Spartans were forced to play down two men for 1:30 which stalled their momentum and spoiled their chances of a legitimate shot at a late comeback.

The Green and White had one last glimmer of hope as Grove City was charged with a penalty with 0:47 left, but Stone came up with another key save and the Wolverines put the finishing touches on the upset victory on the other end with a James Petrolle man-down goal with 31 seconds left.

Up Next
The Spartans hit the road west again next week with a trip to Denison to take on the Big Red on Friday at 4 p.m.

Notes
The all-time series between these two programs is now tied 1-1 after York won the inaugural matchup last year, 20-8 … the loss snapped a four-year run by the Spartan program without a defeat to an unranked opponent (Feb. 22, 2020 vs. Stevenson) and just the second such loss since the start of the 2017 season … the Spartans are off to their first 2-6 start since 2007 … York has now lost five-straight games this season, while Grove City has been victorious in their last four contests … the Wolverines have been tough on their home turf as of late as Saturday marked their eighth-straight victory at home dating back to last season as they are now 5-0 this year … Will Harnick matched his season-high with three goals on Saturday to keep his goal streak alive as he has tallied in all eight games this season … Brent Blackmon led all players with a career-high seven ground balls on the day to go along with a season-high tying four caused turnovers … Nash Womack made his first-career start and stopped a career-best 13 shots in 57 minutes of play.
