RIT Edges Spartans in Top-10 Tilt at Kinsley Field

YORK, Pa. - The York men's lacrosse team's comeback bid fell just short in a 11-10 loss to No. 2 RIT on Saturday at rain-soaked Kinsley Field.

The Spartans battled back from multiple five-goal deficits and used a 4-0 second-half run to cut the Tiger lead down to one with four minutes to go. The two teams traded goals in the final three minutes and the RIT defense came up with one last stop in the final minute to seal the victory.

Team Records
#2 RIT 4-0
#10 York 2-2

How It Happened
  • The Tigers dominated the first quarter and blitzed York with three goals within the first three minutes on their way to a 4-1 lead by quarter's end. The Spartans struggled to gain traction as they started the game with six-straight turnovers, but found a little momentum late in the period with a Jack Grayson tally on the man-up unit.
  • The Spartans fought their way back and cut the RIT lead to three on another Grayson tally with 4:53 left in the second quarter. However, the Tigers won the ensuing faceoff and buried a pair of goals 13 seconds apart to extend their lead back to five. RIT went on to turn the ball on their final two possessions of the first quarter which left the door open for York. The Spartans capitalized on the opportunity as Garrett Keogh connected with Michael Russo for a late goal as York trailed, 8-4, heading into halftime.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued into the third quarter and the two teams combined for three goals in the first two-and-a-half minutes with RIT opening up a 10-5 margin. The Tiger offense went silent the rest of the quarter and York went to work, picking up two goals by Jackson Shields and Davis Fisher as York trailed, 10-7, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Spartans continued to have the upper hand as the fourth unfolded and tacked on two more unanswered goals to cut the RIT to one (10-9) with 4:18 left. A costly turnover on York's very next possession led directly to a Tiger tally on the other end by Jake Erickson which put RIT up two with 2:34 left. The goal by Erickson snapped a 26-minute scoring drought by the Tigers during which Spartan goalie Jack Keller was sensational with seven saves.
  • The Spartans mounted one last stand and once again cut the game down to a one-goal margin on a Russo tally with 1:10 left. Vinny Facciponti won the ensuing faceoff as he finished the quarter a perfect 5-for-5 and set his team up for a chance to tie. After a Spartan timeout, York managed to get two shots off, but the second by Shields was blocked and then scooped up by the Tigers who managed to clear it to safety as time expired.

Up Next
The Spartans remain home and take on No. 1 Salisbury next Saturday at Kinsley Field.
