#11 Spartans Open Mustang Classic with OT Loss to #10 St. Lawrence

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 11 York men's lacrosse team had their fourth-quarter comeback soured by a 9-8 overtime loss to No. 10 St. Lawrence on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the 2024 Mustang Classic.

The Spartans out-scored the Saints, 3-1, in the fourth quarter, including two goals in the final 4:15, to force the game into overtime. York stopped St. Lawrence on the opening possession of OT, but the Spartans coughed it up in their offensive zone which led directly to a Saints goal on the other end as Caleb Torres found Ben Hutchinson for the game-winner.

York battled from behind the entire game and trailed by as much as four goals early in the second quarter. St. Lawrence netted the game's first tally and never trailed as the game had just two ties and no additional lead changes.

#10 St. Lawrence 7-0
#11 York 2-4

How It Happened
  • The Spartan offense struggled to find the back of the net early on as they tallied just one goal through the first 22 minutes of play. During that span, the Saints built up a 5-1 advantage on a string of four unanswered tallies including three-straight in a four-minute span early in the second quarter.
  • Will Harnick snapped a 16-minute scoring drought when he finished on a feed from Michael Russo with 8:16 left in the second quarter. That sparked a three-goal run by York which stretched into the opening possession of the third quarter and cut the St. Lawrence lead down to one. Jackson Hines and Jackson Shields netted the second and third goals on that run and Harnick played a hand in to goals as he assisted Hines.
  • York racked up 11 shots in the third quarter, but put just three on goal. The Saints took advantage of some of the missed opportunities by York and extended their lead to 7-4 midway through the third. Jack Grayson gave the Spartans a boost before the quarter's end as he scored his second man-up goal of the game late in the period to cut the deficit to two heading into the fourth.
  • The Saints won the faceoff battle in the fourth quarter (3-2, but lost the turnover margin (3-0) which opened the door for York. The Saprtans and Coleton Mahorney came marching in as the sophomore netted all three goals for the York and sent the game into overtime.
  • St. Lawrence won the opening faceoff of overtime and looked to end the game quickly, but a Judge Murphy shot was turned away by Spartan goalie Jack Keller. As York looked to transition into their offense, Saint defenseman Tripp Clark trail-checked Grayson and gave possession back to St. Lawrence. The Saints turned defense into offense and rushed down the field where Caleb Torres found Ben Hutchinson on the doorstep where Hutchinson finished for the game-winning tally.
