PINEHURST, N.C. – The York College men's golf squad opened the spring portion of the 2023-24 schedule with a trip to the Tiger Invitational at Forest Creek hosted by Hampden-Sydney.
The Spartans finished 17
th of 18 teams at the highly competitive tournament. York shot a team total of 628 as they shot 313 on Sunday followed by a 315 on Monday. Both days featured challenging weather conditions with cool temps and high wins.
Huntingdon College won the tournament title by six strokes over Methodist. Carnegie Mellon, Washington & Lee and Rochester rounded out the top five teams in the tournament.
Junior
Matthew Salter led the way for the Spartans as he finished tied for 53
rd with a two-day total of 155. Salter shot a 75 during Sunday's first round and then carded an 80 to finish 11-over for the tournament.
Junior
Gavin Ganter was York's next tournament finisher as he tied for 56
th with a tournament score of 156. Ganter shot 79 on Sunday and bettered that by two strokes on Monday with a 77. Junior
Jason Velez placed 76
th with a score of 161. Velez shot 82 on Sunday and improved by three strokes with a 79 on Monday.
Sophomore
Jacob Fripp was three strokes back of Velez in a tie for 77
th at 164. Fripp shot 77 on Sunday but took a step back with an 85 on Monday. Fripp did have the highlight of the tournament on Sunday as the aced the par three 14
th hole. Fripp canned his seven iron on the 183-yard hole. The ace is the first on the men's side since former head coach
Eric Stauffer aced the 193-yard seventh hole at the Glenmaura Country Club with a five iron on April 15, 2013.
Sophomore
Bennett Elgin placed 87
th overall with a two-day score of 167. Elgin shot an 88 on Sunday and then made a nine-stroke improvement with a 79 on Monday.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 23 as the Green and White heads to the McDaniel Spring Invitational at the Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA. The two-day tournament kicks off at 12:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
