#11 Spartans Lose a Close One with #17 RPI to Open Season

YORK, Pa. - The 11th-ranked York men's lacrosse team's comeback bid fell short in an 8-7 loss to No. 17 RPI as the two programs met for the first on Saturday at Kinsley Field to open their 2024 campaigns.

The Engineers took a three-goal lead into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans turned up the offense with three goals in the final six minutes, including two back-to-back, to cut the deficit to one with 1:56 left to play. RPI managed to win the ensuing faceoff following York's second-straight goal which ultimately sealed the win as the Engineers salted away the clock leaving the Spartans with little time to mount a last-minute rally.

Team Records
#17 RPI 1-0
#11 York 0-1

How It Happened
  • The two teams traded blows in the first quarter as they played to a 2-2 tie by quarter's end. Michael Russo opened the scoring with 9:19 left in the period after the Spartans committed turnovers on their first three possessions. The scoring became contagious as the two offenses combined for three goals in less than three minutes with RPI's Anthony Mazzella notching the last goal of the quarter with 1:46 remaining.
  • Both goalies showed out in the second quarter as the two netminders combined for 11 saves with Jack Keller recording six for York and Joseph Perry notching five for RPI. The Engineers capitalized on Keller's final save of the quarter and stunned the Spartans by taking a one-goal lead into halftime on a controversial play to end the half. RPI's Luke Murphy pounced on a loose ball following a save by Keller and flicked the ball back up the middle to Sean Smith at the top of the lane. Smith scooped up the pass and then ripped a shot to the back of the net. The ball seemed to come out of his stick right as the clock hit triple zeros and the referees awarded the goal which gave the Engineers a 4-3 lead at the midway point.
  • Smith extended the RPI lead to two with another goal less than three minutes into the third quarter. Both offenses went silent until the final two-and-a-half minutes of the quarter when three more goals rang up on the scoreboard. Rhys McCarver turned a Spartan defensive stop into a goal with 2:33 left which cut the RPI lead to one. The Spartans would go on to win the next two faceoffs, but it was the Engineers who did the scoring and tacked on two more goals in the final two minutes to take a 7-4 advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • Both goalies stood on their heads yet again as the duo combined for six saves through the first nine minutes of fourth quarter. Will Harnick broke up the scoreless drought as he finished a feed from Jackson Shields with 5:59 left to play. The Engineers responded less than two minutes later and swelled their lead back up to three (8-5) with 4:07 left. Feeling the pressure, the Spartans rose to the occasion and turned two defensive stands into goals with Jackson Hines cutting the RPI lead down to one (8-7) with 1:56 remaining.
  • RPI went on to win the ensuing faceoff and burned down the clock to 30 seconds until Keller came up with another big for York. On the clear attempt, Keller's pass went too far out of reach of his intended target and landed in the hands of the Engineers who went to burn out the remaining few seconds that remained.

Up Next
The Spartans continue their home stand next Saturday in a matchup with No. 7 Washington and Lee starting at 1 p.m.

Notes
The loss for the Spartans marked a rarity in program history as it is their first loss in a season opener at home since 2001 … the Spartans are now 10-3 in season openers under head coach Brandon Childs who took over for the start of the 2012 season … York's last three season openers have all been one-goal contests and each against an opponent ranked or receiving votes in the coaches' poll … Jack Keller recorded his fourth-straight double-digit save performance dating back to last season and eighth overall four his career following his 16-save effort on Saturday which is just one shy of his career-best mark.
