#15 Spartans Outlast #7 Generals in Saturday Slugfest

Facciponti becomes program's all-time ground balls leader

YORK, Pa. - The 15th-ranked York men's lacrosse team out-dueled No. 7 Washington and Lee, 16-15, in a fast-paced battle on a frigid Saturday at Kinsley Field.

Spartan All-American defenseman Brent Blackmon checked the ball loose out of the stick of a hot-handed Hillis Burns with 5:39 left which then led to a Jack Grayson tally on the other end to give the Spartans a crucial two-goal advantage. The play by Blackmon sparked the turning point as the Spartans went on to post back-to-back defensive stops and salt away enough time to eliminate the chances of a late General comeback.

Burns led all players with seven points on the day with four goals and three assists. Jackson Shields led the Spartans with a career-high five goals to go along with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Spartan faceoff specialist Vinny Facciponti became the program's all-time leader in ground balls on Saturday as he scooped up 13 and now has 510 for his career.

#7 Washington and Lee 0-1
#15 York 1-1

How It Happened
  • Both teams had the pedal to the medal in the first quarter as each offense netted five goals in the period, including one each within the first 40 seconds of the contest. The General held a lead for seven minutes before Will Harnick and Michael Russo netted goals 38 seconds apart late in the quarter to tie the game, 5-5.
  • Vinny Facciponti broke up the tie after he won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and sent it home himself for his tally of the season. That sparked a string of three Spartan goals within the first five minutes of the quarter as York opened up a 8-6 advantage. The Generals commanded the rest of the quarter and three-unanswered tallies to take a 9-8 lead into halftime.
  • The two offenses lit up the scoreboard in the third quarter as they once again combined for 10 goals, but this time the Spartans owned a 6-4 split and came away with a 14-13 lead. York's offense was fueled by the Spartans' willingness to get to the dirty areas as they won seven of 10 faceoffs and owned a 15-7 edge in ground balls throughout the quarter. Another key factor was the hot hand of Jackson Shields who pumped in four goals for the Green and White on just four total shots.
  • W&L's Sam Mannino tied the game up, 14-14, a little over three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans regained the lead three minutes later with a Davis Fisher tally. Both offenses went silent for over five minutes until Brent Blackmon's caused turnover on Hillis Burns turned into a Jack Grayson Tally which gave the Spartans a 16-14 lead with 4:39 remaining. Facciponti won the ensuing faceoff and the Spartans stacked up back-to-back defensive stands before turning the ball over with 34 seconds left. Mannino scored again for the Generals with seven seconds left, but W&L would not get another shot off as the clock hit triple zeros.
