Spartan Women End the Game on a 13-0 Run to Swipe a Victory at Neumann

The Spartans held the Knights scoreless over the final five minutes of the game to earn the win

ASTON, PA – The York College women's basketball team picked up a big 60-54 road win at Neumann University on Saturday in Aston, PA.
The Spartans ended the game on a 13-0 run as the Knights got their last points with 5:20 remaining in regulation.
York improves to 5-4 overall while the Knights are also 5-4 overall.
 
How It Happened
• The first quarter featured a slow scoring pace as the teams were tied at six just under four minutes into the game. The Knights scored four straight to take a 10-6 lead. The Green and White responded with an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead with under a minute left in the quarter. Neumann's leading scorer Lauren Klieber made her presence felt int the last 33 seconds of the quarter as she hit a lay-up. York's Makenna Zimmerman hit a lay up but Klieber drilled a three from the wing at the buzzer as the Spartans had to settle for a 16-15 lead after one quarter.
• Zimmerman scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to push the Spartan lead to five. Neumann cut the lead to a pair at 24-22 midway through the quarter. York scored the next seven points of the quarter to push out to a nine-point advantage. The Knights answered with the final two buckets of the quarter, slicing the Spartan lead to five at 31-26 at the break.
• York held the Knights to 26.5% (9-for-34) shooting from the floor while York converted 45.2% from the floor. The Spartans went just 1-for-7 from three and 2-for-5 from the line in the half in the first 20 minutes of play. The Knights hammered the Spartans on the boards 27-18 including 12 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second chance points.
• The Spartans scored first in the third quarter on a Morgan Adams jumper to push the lead to seven but the Knights hit the Spartans with a 9-0 run to take a 35-33 lead with 5:10 left in the period. Jacqueline Wardrop led the Knights on the run with five points. Zimmermann tied the game at 35 with a jumper but Bri Gautier converted a three point play to give the Knights a 38-35 lead. Georgia Panopoulos hit a triple followed by a pair of Adams free throws to give York a 40-38 lead. The Knights got a free throw and an Emily DuPont lay up to give the hosts a 41-40 lead heading to the fourth. The Spartans had seven turnovers in the quarter which gave the Knights seven points.
• In the fourth quarter, the Spartans tied the game at 45 only to see the Knights go on a 9-2 run to take a 54-47 lead with 5:20 left in the game. That would be the last time the Knights would score in the game as York fashioned a 13-0 run over the final 5:12 of the game to capture victory. Breana Grim hit a jumper to ignite the Spartan run. Adams, who had seven points on the run, tied the game on a lay up with 2:41 left and then put the Spartans on top with another lay up with 1:36 left, giving York the two-point lead. Panopoulos drilled two free throws with 11 seconds left and then Grim closed out the scoring with two free throws of her own with eight ticks left to salt away the road win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 40% (24-for-60) from the field and 18.8% (3-for-16) from downtown … the Spartans converted 64.3% (9-for-14) from the free throw line … the Knights shot 31.1% (19-for-61) from the floor including 23.8% (5-for-21) from distance … the Knights shot 73.3% (11-for-15) from the free throw line … the Knights held a slight 42-40 advantage on the glass but York out-rebounded the Knights 25-15 in the second half … there were 16 ties and 10 lead changes in the game … both teams had 15 turnovers as York turned those mistakes into 16 points while the Knights had 12 points off the Spartan turnovers .. York finished the game with 10 steals … York had a 28-24 margin in paint points … Neumann had a 15-10 edge in second chance points thanks to their 16-13 margin in offensive rebounds … Lauren Klieber, who entered the game averaging 24.4 points per game, led the Knights with 18 points and seven rebounds … Aubrie Breisblatt notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds … Bri Gautier was the third Knight in double figures with 10 points.
 
Spartan Notes
York is now 2-1 all-time against the Knights … the Spartans have now won three of their last four … York shot 40% from the floor and that's the sixth time the Spartans have shot 41% or worse from the floor … the good news is they held Neumann to just 31.1% shooting and that's the fifth time they have held an opponent to 35% or less shooting in a game … York has made just nine threes in their last three games combined as York is 9-for-43 (20.9%) from distance in their last three games … the Spartans have been out-rebounded in their last three games and in seven of their nine games this year … York had 17 assists, their second highest total of the year (18 vs. Penn State Altoona) … York tied a season-high with six blocked shots as they reached that mark for the fourth time this year … York had ten steals and that's the sixth time they have reached double figures this year … Morgan Adams and Makenna Zimmerman led the way for the Spartans as the dynamic duo scored 31 of the Spartans 60 points … Adams had 17 points and six rebounds in her 22 minutes of action … Adams was 7-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the line … Zimmerman came off the bench to register 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Green and White … Breana Grim added nine points, four rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and one steal in 38 minutes of action … Georgia Panopoulos came off the bench to score seven points, grab a career-high six rebounds with two assists, a block and two steals.

The Spartans are now off until Saturday, December 28 when the Spartans face off against Fitchburg State in the opening round of the Daytona Beach Shootout in Daytona Beach, Florida. Tip time is set for 4:00 pm.
