McDaniel Starts Hot to Down York in Women’s Hoops

YORK, Pa. – A lopsided first quarter in favor of McDaniel eventually resulted in a 66-52 victory over York women's basketball on Tuesday night inside Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Terror jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter of play and carried that theme throughout the night as they shot 51.0% from the floor while out-scoring the Spartans 34-12 in the paint.

How It Happened
The Green Terror stormed out to a 20-9 lead at the end of one quarter of play as they shot 60.0% from the floor and out-rebounded York 13-7. McDaniel's Elaina Beckett scored the first bucket of the game and went on to lead all players with six points in the period. Morgan Adams paced the Spartans with five points as York shot just 3-for-14 in the first quarter.

The Terror narrowly out-scored the Spartans in the second quarter, 13-12, as they took a 33-21 lead into halftime. McDaniel made just four field goals in the second quarter, but made the most of their made baskets as they went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, including one by Ally Mathias with 1:51 left which gave the Terror their largest lead of the night (18 points).

The Spartans won the third quarter, 17-14, and cut their deficit to nine (47-38) through 30 minutes of play. York turned up the pressure late in the quarter with Georgia Panopoulos leading the way as she scored all seven points on a 7-2 run which cut the McDaniel lead down to seven. The Terror scored the last points of the quarter on a Payton Tague layup with 33 seconds left to bump the lead to nine heading into the fourth. Panopolous led all players in the quarter with seven points as she went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Terror held just a 6-5 edge in made field goals in the fourth quarter, but were much more efficient than the Spartans as they shot 54% from the floor to go along with a 9-5 advantage in rebounds. McDaniel put the game out of reach with an 11-3 run through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter which extended their lead  to 17. Elaina Beckett fueled that run with eight points to lead all players in scoring in the fourth.

The Spartans remain at home this weekend for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday and Saturday. York opens up against Mount Aloysius at 5 p.m. on Friday.

The Spartans are now 16-26 all-time against McDaniel having lost the last two meetings … McDaniel's Elaina Beckett led all players with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and a game-high three blocks … Georgia Panopoulos led the Spartans with 14 points and tied her career-high with four steals … Breana Grim (12) and Morgan Adams (11) also landed in double figures … Adams led all players with eight rebounds.
