OWINGS MILLS, MD – The York College men's soccer squad picked up three important conference points with a 4-0 win at Stevenson University on Tuesday night in Owings Mills, MD. The win clinches a berth in next week's MAC Commonwealth tournament and a Saturday victory will clinch the second seed in the tournament for the Spartans.
The Spartans notched a first half goal and then put the game away with three second half goals.
York improves to 12-1-5 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. They have 13 points and currently sit second behind Messiah who has already clinched the top seed. Stevenson falls to 3-9-6 overall and 1-3-2 in the conference as they have been eliminated from tournament qualification.
How It Happened
• The Spartans struck early as they were fouled on their offensive side of midfield.
Matt Zeiders hit beautiful service to
Gavin Bealer just outside the left of the box. Bealer hit a half volley that was headed home by
Dermot Williamson for the 1-0 lead just 6:21 into the game.
• The Green and White had some other chances in the first half but would settle for the 1-0 lead at the half. They out-shot the Mustangs 9-6 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. York had a slight 2-1 margin in corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of play.
• The Spartans added to the lead with 22 minutes left in regulation as
Shaun Apsley ripped a shot that was saved by Mustang goalie Nolen Olson-Warwick but the rebound went right to the foot of
Ricky Cicmanec who finished off the chance for his third goal of the year.
• Less than ten minutes later, the Spartans added to the lead as a pair of freshmen combined for a nice goal.
Aiden Hall collected a throw in along the far sideline. He carried the ball into the Spartans offensive third before sliding a pass to
Colin Findlay who one-timed a shot into the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.
• The fourth Spartan goal was pretty as junior defender
Owen Henderlite collected a failed Mustang clear. He carried the ball towards the box, beating a pair of defenders before unleashing a bomb into the upper right 90 for the goal with 5:45 left in the game.
• The Spartans finished the game out shooting Stevenson 21-12 including 14-4 in shots on goal. York had an 8-2 bulge in corner kicks while the Spartans were whistled for off sides twice.
