READING, PA – The York College women's soccer team picked up a 5-1 MAC Commonwealth win at Albright College on Saturday night in Reading, PA.
The Spartans scored four goals in a 20-minute stretch of the first half to cruise to the league win.
York improves to 10-3-4 overall and 4-1 in the league. Albright falls to 2-11-2 overall and 0-5 in the Commonwealth.
How It Happened
• The Spartans took control from the start of the first half. York collected the game's first three shots, putting all three on goal. The Spartans opened the scoring when
Jess Bentzel collected a turnover from the Lions, beat three defenders and unleashed a rocket from the top of the box for the 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute of play.
• The Spartans made it 2-0, 12 minutes later as
Meg Kalthof headed a loose ball to the middle of the box where
Meg Bailey ran onto the pass and finished off the chance for the goal. The Spartans tacked on a third goal 12 seconds later off the Albright kick off. Bailey made a great hustle play as she intercepted a pass off the kick off and sent a pass forward to Kalthof who finished off the chance for the goal.
• York made it 4-0 seven minutes later as Bailey picked up a loose ball just outside of the left post. She knocked a pass to the middle of the goal where
Carissa Baugus converted the opportunity for the four-goal lead.
• The Spartans out shot the Lions 15-0 in total shots and 11-0 in shots on goal. The Spartans had a 3-0 margin in corner kicks in the opening half.
• The Lions got on the board in the 58
th minutes. Albright's Mackenzie Sowers took a pass near the top of the box, got around a Spartan defender and finished off a chance inside the right post to break up the shutout.
• York got that goal back in the 73
rd minute.
Carly Vincent carried the ball towards the left side of the box. She ripped a shot that went off the cross bar and came to the feet of
Helen Cheng. The sophomore's first shot was saved but she got the second rebound to go for her first collegiate tally.
• The Spartans finished the game with a 27-3 bulge in total shots and a 16-1 margin in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
