Spartans Drop Two at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Spartan women's volleyball team lost a pair of matches in a tri-match at Susquehanna University on Saturday. The Spartans lost to Drew, 3-0, in their first match of the day and then fell in five sets to the host River Hawks in their second match.

Match One: Drew 3, York 0
The Spartans gave up the lead late and fell, 25-21, in set number one to Drew. York went ahead, 2-1, and went on to lead by as much as six until the Rangers came back to the set, 17-17. The Rangers went on to out-score the Spartans 8-5 down the stretch to seal the win. York held a 15-9 advantage in kills in the first set with Morgan Nolte leading all players with five Liz Kerin compiling four.

The two sides went back-and-forth early in the second set, but Drew managed to fend off York just enough for another 25-21 win. The Spartans erased a four-point deficit and fought back to tie the match, 21-21, but two-straight York attack errors sparked a 4-0 run for the Rangers which ended the set. York again held a large margin in kills, 14-8, with Nolte leading the way with eight.

The third set was tight all the way with six ties and five lead changes, but ultimately broke in favor of the Rangers, 25-23. The Spartans faced a five-point deficit, 22-17, but then ripped off six-straight points with Kerin serving to take a 23-22 edge. Alyssa Rachwal ended York's with a kill for Drew and then the Spartans committed back-to-back hitting errors as the set and the match came to an abrupt end.

Match Two: Susquehanna 3, York 2
The Spartans and River Hawks put together a closely contested match to close out the day. The two teams alternate sets with the Spartans winning the first and third frames.

The fifth set also started out tight and had four ties with a pair of lead changes before Susquehanna pulled away to a 15-9 win to clinch the match. The River Hawks went on a 5-0 run and were the first team to reach eight points as they led 8-5 at the midway break. From there, SU out-scored York 7-4 as the attack errors piled up for the Spartans.

Five Spartans notched double-digit kill totals with Nolte leading the way with 17, followed by Georgianna Kahley (15), Jennifer Taylor (14), Liz Kerin (13) and Jillian Kloc (10). 

Notes
York compiled a season-high 72 kills in the loss to Susquehanna and matched a season-high with 10 blocks … Alyssa Mott dished out a career-best 61 assists to go along with 10 digs in her fourth double-double performance of the season … Morgan Nolte led the Spartans on the day with 30 kills while hitting a robust .609 … Liz Kerin racked up 19 total kills while swinging .630 and led the Spartans with six total blocks.

What's Next
The Spartans return home on Wednesday night to take on Messiah in a pivotal Commonwealth contest.
