GRANTHAM, PA – The seventh-ranked Messiah University Falcons handed the York College women's soccer team a 3-0 loss on Saturday evening in Grantham.
The Falcons struck early and handcuffed the Spartan offense over the course of the match.
The Spartans fall to 8-3-4 overall and 2-1 in the Commonwealth. The Falcons improve to 10-1-3 and 3-0 in the league. The Falcons have now won nine straight.
How It Happened
• The Falcons wasted little time in jumping on top of the Green and White. Messiah got a Tahlia Lloyd goal a mere 2:15 into the game to put the hosts up early. The Spartans spent a majority of the first half playing defense as Messiah out shot the Spartans 7-0 in total shots and 2-0 in shots on goal. Messiah had four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of play.
• After a second half that was lacking much offensive punch for the Green and White, the Falcons made it 2-0 as Julia Martin collected a loose ball and made a pass to Hannah Adair who unleashed a upper left 90 shot from about 22 yards out for the goal. The Falcons made it 3-0 1:04 later as Lloyd ripped a shot from beyond the box that hit the cross bar and snuck in for her second goal of the night.
• The Spartans finally registered their first shot of the night as a
Gabby Jennings attempt was blocked.
Lexi Mazzella collected the rebound and put a shot on goal that was saved by Messiah goalie Ava Wert. That was the extent of the Spartan offense for the evening.
• York was out shot 22-2 for the match including 7-1 in shots on goal. Messiah also had a 10-1 bulge in corner kicks. The Falcons were whistled for five off sides in the match.
