Spartans Draw with No. 6 Misericordia

Cougars tally with 44 seconds left to fend of upset

YORK, Pa. - A last-minute tally by sixth-ranked Misericordia spoiled an upset bid by the Spartan women's soccer team as the two sides settled for a 1-1 draw Wednesday at Graham Field.

#6 Misericordia 10-1-2
York 8-2-4

How It Happened
After a one-sided first half, the Spartans slightly tilted the field in their favor late into the second half. A foul by the Cougars in front of the York bench gave the Green and White an opportunity at a set piece play and the Saprtans capitalized. Morgan Joyce served the ball into the box where Sara Frensley managed to cut through traffic and get enough of the ball to force a save by Lauren Mondor. Frensley's shot was not controlled by Mondor and Carissa Baugus punched in the rebound for her first goal of the season as York went  in front, 1-0, in the 74th minute of play.

Both teams continued to throw punches down the stretch and York's back line thwarted numerous frantic attempts by the Cougars to stave off the upset. The pressure eventually came to a head in the final minute as the Spartans attempted to clear the ball out of the box, but instead it landed at the feet of Julia Beck who ripped a shot past a sprawling Joss Metz for a dramatic game-tying goal with just 44 seconds left.

The Spartans held off a barrage of shots from Misericordia all night, particularly in the first half as the Cougars racked up a 13-0 shot margin with seven of those shots landing on target. York mounted a key defensive stand from the 23rd through 28th minutes during which the Cougars racked up four shots on goal, but were denied three times by Metz and once by Frensley who notched a crucial team save from her center back position.

Notes
York is now 1-3-1 all-time against Misericordia as the draw snapped a three-game Spartan skid  against the Cougars … both teams extended their unbeaten streaks to four games following Wednesday's draw with the Spartans now rolling at 3-0-1 and the Cougars at 2-0-2 … the Spartans are now 5-1-2 at home this season, while the Dutchmen remain unbeaten on the road at 3-0-2 … the Spartan defense stifled a Misericordia team which entered the night averaging 3.08 goals per game on the season and scored 14 in their previous two contests … tonight's late second half deficit marked just the second time Misericordia has trailed at any point in a game this season … the goal by Carissa Baugus was her first of the season and third of her career.
