Spartans Outlast Widener in Five

CHESTER, Pa. - The Spartan women's volleyball team outlasted Widener in a marathon five-set match on the road Tuesday night.

Team Records
York 7-12 (3-1 MACC)
Widener 14-8 (1-3 MACC)

How It Happened
Widener prevailed, 31-29, in an elongated first set which had seven lead changes and 17 ties as neither team led by more than three points at any point in the set. A costly attack error York ultimately decided the set, but the Spartans put together a strong offensive effort as they hit .304 with 20 kills and had three players with five or more led by Morgan Nolte who had six.

The second set also went to extra points as York claimed a 27-25 win to even up the match. The Spartans opened the set on a 7-0 run and never trailed despite Widener forcing a tie four different times, the last of which was 25-25. From there, the Pride hit into a service error and Georgianna Kahley notched the clinching kill for York as she led all players with five in the set.

After a back-and-forth start, York pulled out in front and never relinquished control in a 25-17 win in the third set. The Pride threatened late as they pulled within three points of the York lead (19-16), but the Spartans finished the set on a 9-4 run with three kills by Kahley leading the way.

The Pride extended the match after claiming a victory in another marathon battle as they held off York, 30-28, in the fourth set. The Spartans saw the set starting to slip away as they trailed 15-10, but they rallied back on a 10-4 run to take a on-point lead (20-19). From there, the lead changed five more times with nine ties before Widener notched a kill and received a Spartan attack error for the necessary consecutive points needed to seal the set.

The fifth set had an early seesaw battle and Widener was the first team to reach eight points as they led 8-6 at the midway break. From there, it was all York as the Spartans ended the set on a 9-3 run led by three kills by Jillian Kloc as the Green and White claimed a 15-11 win to clinch the match.
