YORK, PA - The York College Spartan women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 shut out against the Ithaca bombers in a sweltering mid-day matchup on Sunday afternoon in York.
The match saw two out of conference teams that could not have been much more evenly matched.
The lone goal in the defensive contest was scored in the 25th minute when two seniors Ally Stanton and Sarah Sinnott connected on a centered cross that barely went past the outstretched arms of Spartan goalie
Teresa Gonzalez, as well as sneaking it past the Spartan defender draped on her in the box. Sinnott's laser kick was her second goal of the year which took the Bombers to 2-0 on the year and dropped the Spartans to 0-2.
How It Happened
• Both teams were selective with shooting this afternoon, with both teams only combining for fourteen shots on goal in the game, with Ithaca edging York in that category 9-5. The singular goal in the game was one of few that came within the box for either team.
• The Spartans had another great defensive showing, which led to a few promising looking plays that ultimately could not lead to anything as the Bombers refused to let the Green and White have any breathing room on their side of the field.
•
Teresa Gonzalez made a solid second consecutive start, recording five saves and helped keep the Spartans in the game in the closing moments of the first half with a one-on- one stop with a nice close out on another good Sarah Sinnott strike that Gonzalez and the defense handled.
• The fresh set of forty five minutes saw the Bombers control time of possession and then eventually play bend but don't break defense which granted the Spartans more ball movement, but did not result in any quality shots.
• After Gonzalez handled one last Bomber threat, the Spartans had their last real chance with a corner kick in the 83rd minute that did not result in a shot on a goal, and sealed the Ithaca win.
Spartan Notes
The match up was the first between the two programs … the Spartans drop their first two games for the first time since 2019 … Spartan goalie
Teresa Gonzalez made eight more saves as she now has 19 saves in her two games with three goals allowed … the shutout loss was just the fourth in the last two years and just the second at home … York falls to 0-2 at home after going 9-1-1 last year … York was 6-2 in one-goal games last fall but fall to 0-2 with the two narrow setbacks.
