Martino's Five Points Powers #8 Spartans to Road Win

The Spartans downed Susquehanna 4-1 in Selinsgrove on Wednesday

SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College field hockey squad bounced back from Saturday's loss to nationally ranked Lynchburg with a 4-1 road win at Susquehanna University on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans dominated much of the game as they rolled to their seventh win in eight games this year. Susquehanna falls to 6-3 with the loss.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a good start as they took the play to the River Hawks in the first quarter. York out shot Susquehanna 4-0 in the first 15 minutes of play but River Hawk goalie Ashley Derrick made three saves to keep the game scoreless after one quarter of play.
• York broke into the scoring column in the 21st minute of play as Katie Martino found the back of the cage off a pass from freshman Olivia Miller. Martino's shot was the third in a series as the Spartan pressure paid off with Martino's fifth goal of the year. The Spartans struck for a second goal as they drew a corner 1:04 after the first goal. York converted the chance as Maycee Collison found Martino for York's second goal and the 2-0 lead. York continued to pressure the River Hawk defense as the fired off three more shots on goal in the final seven minutes of the half before heading to the break.
• York out-shot the River Hawks 11-0 in the first half including 9-0 in shots on goal. York also had a 2-0 margin in penalty corners. Derrick was busy in net for Susquehanna with seven first half saves.
• Much like the first quarter, the Spartans dominated the third quarter but were unable to find the back of the cage. The Spartans out shot Susquehanna 8-1 including 5-1 in shots on goal. The Spartans did get a big defensive save by Libby Wild 3:27 into the second half to preserve the shutout to that point.
• York extended their lead to 3-0 2:14 into the fourth quarter as grad senior Hannah Huffman recorded a goal off a Martino pass. The tally was her third of the year. The Green and White capped their scoring nine minutes later as freshman Kelsey Welsh notched her first collegiate goal off a pass from fellow freshman Hannah Downs providing for the final Spartan goal.
• Susquehanna spoiled the shutout with 51 seconds left in the game as Taylor Rothermel scored off a Katie Bucher assist. The goal was Rothermel's second of the season.
