WINCHESTER, VA – The Spartan men's golf team put together a strong performance a the 36-hole Shenandoah University Fall Invitational at Winchester Country Club in Winchester, Virginia on Monday.
The Spartans were on point on Monday as they fired a team total of 576. York shot 291 in the first round and followed that with a six-shot improvement as they recorded a team score 285 during the second round.
The Spartans won the tournament by five strokes as Gettysburg and Shenandoah finished tied for second with matching scores of 581. Hampden-Sydney was fourth with a score of 583 while Stevenson rounded out the tournament's top five with a 591. There were 14 teams at the tournament.
The tournament format was unique with the 36 holes in one day while the teams were also allowed to have six players and count their top four scores in each round.
In round one,
Jacob Fripp led the way as he fired a three-under-par 68 for his best collegiate round. Junior
Jason Velez was York's next first round finisher as he carded a two-over-par 73.
Matthew Salter was one stroke back of Velez as he shot a three-over 74.
Thomas O'Connell and
Bennett Elgin both shot 76 in round one. Junior
Gavin Ganter was York's sixth player in round one with an 83.
The second round saw a pair of Spartans go under par led by Velez as he was carded a three-under-par 68. That gave Velez a total of 141 as he placed fourth overall, three strokes out of first place. Salter finished round two with a two-under-par 69 to finish with a total of 143 as he tied for fifth overall.
O'Connell, in his first collegiate tournament, shot a two-over-par 73 in his second round to finish the tournament with a total of 149. He concluded the tournament in 16
th place. Ganter made an eight-shot improvement in round two to finish with a 75. Ganter's tournament total of 158 left him tied for 45
th on the day.
Elgin was York's fifth finisher in round two as he shot a 76 to conclude the day with a score of 152 as he placed tied for 26
th. Fripp concluded his day with an 82 in round two. His score of 150 tied him for 17
th overall.
The Spartans return to action on October 7 when they head to McDaniel Fall Invitational at the Waynesboro Country Club for a two-day tournament. The action kicks off on Saturday at noon in Waynesboro.
