SALISBURY, MD – The York College women's soccer squad picked up a gritty 1-0 road win at Salisbury University on Sunday afternoon. The game was scheduled to be played on Saturday but the tropical storm remnants that were near Salisbury on Saturday necessitated the change to Sunday.
The Spartans scored with less than ten minutes remaining in the game to pull out the one-goal victory.
The Spartans improve to 4-4 overall including 3-1 on the road. The Sea Gulls are now 4-4-1 overall. Salisbury has lost three straight 1-0 decisions.
How It Happened
• The opening 20 minutes of play consisted of the two teams trading possessions in the middle of the pitch. The Sea Gulls had an early shot blocked and the Spartans fired off their first shot when
Alyssa Russell squeezed off a shot that was saved by Sea Gull goalie Hayle Foreman. Russell also had a header that was just above the crossbar a few minutes later.
• The Spartans had a break away opportunity in the 27
th minute as
Jena Witters was on the receiving end of a long outlet. She had a defender to her left but she wasn't able to get much on the shot from 15 yards out as Foreman scooped up the easy save. The Spartans had another chance in the 31
st minute as
Carissa Baugus hit a strong strike from just outside the box but, unfortunately for York, the ball was right at Foreman who made the stop.
• The Spartans out shot their hosts 6-2 in the opening half including 3-0 in shots on goal. York also had a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.
• The second half was the theme of back and forth play with neither team having any appreciable momentum or possession. The Sea Gulls had back-to-back shots in the 73
rd minute but the first attempt was blocked and the second attempt was high. The Spartans finally struck for the game's lone goal in the 82
nd minute. The Spartans drew their fifth corner kick of the day.
Meg Kalthof took the corner kick from the right side of the goal. Her kick found the head of
Ashlynn Weger who banged home the shot off a Salisbury defender who was on the line for the Gulls. The goal was Weger's second of the year for the Green and White.
• The Spartans managed to kill off the remainder of the game, allowing just one Salisbury shot over the final eight minutes of the game.
