#7 Field Hockey Falls at #25 Lynchburg, 2-0

The Spartans were out-shot 14-5 as they were shut out for the first time this year

SWEET BRIAR, VA – The seventh-ranked York College field hockey squad dropped their first game of the season as #25 Lynchburg downed the Spartans 2-0 on a rainy Saturday in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
The Spartans see their six-game win streak come to an end as they are now 6-1 while the Hornets improve to 6-1.

How It Happened
• The first period was bereft of many offensive chances. York had the period's lone shot as Hannah Downs' attempt on goal was saved by Hornet goalie Kayla Brady. That was it for first period statistics as much of the game was played between the circles.
• The Hornets got on the board early in the second quarter. The Hornets drew their first penalty corner of the game just over a minute into the period. The Hornets inserted the ball to the top of the circle where Renee Van Thiel ripped a shot towards the cage. Khanyisile Mzizi redirected the ball around Spartan keeper Belle Fields before Anna Dorrestjin finished off the chance inside the left post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first career tally for the freshman.
• Lynchburg held a slight 4-3 edge in total shots in the quarter while York had a 2-1 margin in penalty corners. Hornet goalie Kayla Brady notched a pair of saves in the second.
• The Hornets added to their lead midway through the third quarter as Lynchburg drew their second penalty corner of the game. The Spartans survived the first rush but after trying to clear the ball, Marlou Wendricks stole the ball and unleashed a back handed shot that flew just under the cross bar for the 2-0 Lynchburg lead. The goal was Wendricks' fifth goal of the year. The Hornets dominated the third quarter as they out-shot York 6-0 while they also held the Spartans without a corner.
• Things weren't much better in the fourth quarter for the Spartans as Lynchburg held a 4-1 margin in total shots and a 4-0 bulge in penalty corners. Lynchburg finished the game out shooting the Spartans 14-5 including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four goalie saves in the game.

Spartan Notes
The loss snaps a two game win streak against the Hornets as Lynchburg is now 9-6 all-time against the Green and White … the 6-1 start for the Spartan ties their best beginning to a season as the 2021 squad also opened the campaign 6-1 with their first loss coming on the road to a nationally ranked squad (#17 Susquehanna) … the Spartans were shut out for the first time this year while the five shots were also a season low … York put all five of their shots on target in the game … the Spartans got out shot in just their second game this year … York lost the battle of the penalty corners for the third time this year as they had a season low two corners … the two goals allowed were a season high for York.

Up Next
The Spartans stay on the road on Wednesday afternoon when they head to Susquehanna University to face the River Hawks in another key regional tilt. Game time in Selinsgrove is set for 4:30 pm.
