ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The York College women's soccer squad dropped a 2-0 road decision at #15 Rochester on Saturday afternoon in New York.
The Spartans held the Yellow Jackets off the board for the first 76 minutes of the game before the hosts got a pair of goals in the final 13 minutes of the contest.
Rochester improves to 5-0-1 while the Spartans fall to 2-4.
How It Happened
• The Yellow Jackets controlled play in the first half as they out shot the Spartans 9-0 in the opening 45 minutes of play. Spartan goalie
Teresa Gonzalez made five saves in the half for the Green and White. The Spartans did manage to have three corner kicks but couldn't create a chance on their corner opportunities.
• The Spartans recorded their first shot of the game in the 55
th minute as
Ashlynn Weger put a shot on goal that was saved by Rochester goalie Grace Kuropatkin. Weger got a second chance just under two minutes later but again, Kuropatkin was up to the task. The second half was more back and forth as York got their footing in the second 45 minutes of play.
Morgan Joyce put a pair of attempts on goal in a four-minute stretch but the game remained scoreless.
• Rochester saw Lauren Blanch hit the cross bar in the 72
nd minute of play as the game remained tied. York got their final shot of the game in the 74
th minute as
Julianna Shilling's shot was saved by Kuropatkin. The Yellow Jackets finally broke the stalemate in the 78
th minute as Sydney Holmes headed home a corner kick from Grace Regenstreif to put the Jackets up 1-0. The goal was Holmes' first of the year.
• The Yellow Jackets got a big insurance goal in the 83
rd minute as Katharina Probst slipped a pass to Maya Bravo who blasted a 16-yard strike from the top of the box into the upper left 90 for the 2-0 lead. Rochester killed off the final seven minutes of the game to earn their fifth win of the year.
Spartan Notes
The meeting was the second in the series history as each home team has won after the Spartans captured the 1-0 win last fall in York … Rochester has allowed just two goals in their six games with five shutouts … the Spartans were shutout for the second time this season … York's loss was just the first that came by more than one goal … York was out shot 20-5 in the game but just 8-5 in shots on goal … York held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks …
Teresa Gonzalez made six saves in the game as she now has 37 saves in six games … the loss is the first road loss in three matches for York.
