HARRISBURG, PA – The York College men's golf squad concluded their first tournament of the fall campaign with a strong showing at the Gauntlet Tournament at Dauphin Highlands on Monday.
The Spartans finished third of 14 teams at the two-day tournament. York was fantastic on Monday morning as York finished one-under-par as a team after being fifth after round one. York fired a team score of 287 on Monday, one stroke back of team champion Franklin and Marshall as the Diplomats shot 286 as a team.
Overall, Franklin and Marshall shot a two-day total of 574, a cumulative two-under-par score. Randolph-Macon, the first-round leaders, shot 575 as a team as they went 281 on Sunday followed by a 294 on Monday. The Spartans were very consistent, shooting 289 on Sunday followed by a 287 to shoot even par for the tournament. McDaniel finished fourth at 579 while Dickinson rounded out the top five at 582.
Junior
Jason Velez paced the Spartans as he finished tied for second with a two-day total of 139. Velez fired a four-under-par 68 on Monday morning. Velez started on the par five fifth hole and started his round with a birdie. After a par on six, he birdied seven before a bogey on nine pushed him back to minus one. He parred ten and then flushed back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12 to drop him to three under. Velez finished the back with six pars as he shot 34 on the back. He made the turn for his final four holes and birdied one to go to four under. He notched pars on two, three and four to complete his round. He finished one stroke back of Drew's Elliot Parker who fired a 65 on Monday to capture the individual win.
Velez's 68 set a new career best for the junior while his two-day total of 139 was also a career best by 11 strokes.
Junior
Matthew Salter had a strong round on Monday as he finished tied for eighth overall with a two-day total of 143. Salter shot 71 on Monday after a 72 on Sunday. Salter started his day on the sixth hole and had six straight pars. He had a hiccup on 12 with a double bogey on the par five 12
th hole. He bounced back to notch five pars and one birdie on the last six holes on the back nine. Salter recorded two birdies in his first three holes on the front. He finished two-under on the front nine for his 71.
Junior
Gavin Ganter was York's third finisher as he tied for 22
nd with a two-day total of 146. Ganter shot matching 73's for the tournament. He started his day on the seventh hole and recorded pars on the last three holes of the front nine. He notched a birdie on 11 as he was one under until a bogey at 16 dropped him to even par. Ganter then had six straight pars before a birdie on five dropped him below par. He concluded his round with a double bogey on six as he finished one-over.
Sophomore
Jacob Fripp was York's fourth scorer on Monday as he shot 75 to finish with a score of 148. Fripp started on the sixth hole as he got off to a rough beginning to the round. He bogeyed three of his first four holes. He bounced back with a par, a birdie and a par on the first three rounds of the back nine. Back-to-back bogeys left him four over par. He birdied 15 as he finished even on the back nine. Fripp bogeyed one and birdied four as he shot a three-over 39 on the front nine.
Junior
Bennett Elgin was York's fifth tournament participant. He finished the tournament tied for 70
th as he shot 158 for the tournament after a 79 on Monday. Elgin shot 42 on the back nine and 37 on the front.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, October 7 when they travel to the McDaniel Fall Invitational. The two-day tournament kicks off from the Waynesboro Country Club at noon.
