HARRISBURG, PA – The York College men's golf squad opened their fall campaign on Sunday at the Gauntlet Tournament at Dauphin Highlands Golf Club in Harrisburg, PA.
The Spartans played well as they shot a team-total of 289. They are fifth of 14 teams at the tournament. Randolph-Macon shot a team total of seven-under-par 281 as they hold a five-shot lead over Dickinson and Farmingdale State as they each recorded team scores of 286. Franklin & Marshall is one shot in front of York in fourth as the Spartans round out the top five teams.
Jason Velez led the Spartans in the opening round as he carded a one-under-par 71. Velez was very steady during the round as he birdied the par four sixth hole while he parred the other eight holes on the front to shoot a 35. He ripped off six straight pars to start the back nine before a bogey on 16 left him at level par. Velez bounced back with a birdie on the par 3 17
th hole and a par on 18 to finish the round with a 71. Velez is tied for 12
th, four strokes back of individual leader Mackenzie Kim from Farmingdale State.
Matthew Salter raced off to a very fast start as he had three birdies in the first five holes. He bogeyed six and nine as he finished with a one-under-par 35 on the front. Salter had eight pars and one bogey on the back nine to shoot 37 for an even par 72. Salter is tied for 16
th in the 75-player field.
Jacob Fripp and
Gavin Ganter closed out the Spartan scoring foursome as they each shot a one-over-par 73. Fripp was one-over on the front nine with a bogey on nine. He then tallied two birdies on the first three holes on the back but then had bogeys on 13 and 14 before three straight pars to end the round. Ganter was even on the front with nine straight pars. He birdied 12 to go to one under but bogeys on 14 and 16 left him one over for the round.
Bennett Elgin was York's fifth tournament participant as he shot a 79. Elgin shot a three-over 39 on the front and then was four over on the back.
The Spartans conclude the two day tournament on Monday morning at 8 am with a shot gun start in Harrisburg.
