Spartans Three-Peat as MAC Commonwealth Champions

YORK, Pa. - The top-seeded Spartan men's lacrosse team captured their third-straight MAC Commonwealth title with a 14-9 victory over second-seed Stevenson on Saturday at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans fought back from an early 2-0 deficit and ripped off seven-unanswered goals during a 25-minute scoring drought by the Mustangs that spanned most of the first and second quarters. The Mustangs cut the deficit as low as three in the third quarter, but the Spartans went on to out-score Stevenson 5-3 the rest of the way to seal the win.

Spartan graduate attackman Ames Clark earned MAC Commonwealth Championship MVP honors.

How It Happened
The Spartans found themselves in a little hot water early as they looked up at an early 2-0 deficit. The two teams split the first two faceoffs and a Spartan turnover on their first possession led to a second-straight Stevenson goal less than three minutes into the game. York quickly rallied and ripped off three-straight goals in a two-minute span which sparked a 6-0 Spartan run to end the quarter. Jack Grayson, Will Harnick and Jacob Wilhelm did all the scoring for York as they each netted a pair.

After Stevenson's early lead, the Spartans held the Mustangs scoreless for 25-straight minutes before Cam Leydig broke the drought with a nifty one-timer with 2:25 left in the second quarter. Spartan goalie Jack Keller racked up six of his 11 saves during that span to highlight a stellar Spartan defensive effort which ultimately made the difference in York's victorious outcome.

After trailing by five (8-3) at halftime, the Mustangs cut the deficit to three (9-6) with 6:02 left in the third quarter. A costly penalty by Stevenson's Ryan Quinn put the Spartan man-up unit to work and they made the Mustangs pay as Michael Russo finished off a feed from JD Townsend. York tacked on two more goals shortly after as the Green and White took a 12-6 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With time dwindling and looking up at a five-goal deficit, Stevenson head coach Paul Cantabene attempted to pull one last rabbit out of his head by calling for a stick check on Vinny Facciponti. The move proved successful for the Mustangs as the Spartan FOGO was called for an illegal stick with 1:45 left which resulted in a three-minute non-releasable penalty. However, it was too little too late for Cantabene and the Mustangs as they went on to turn the ball over on their ensuing possession to surrender victory to the Spartans.

York will await the NCAA Selection Show to determine when and where they will be playing next in the upcoming NCAA postseason. That show is slated for 9 p.m. Sunday evening on NCAA.com.
