York picks up 10th-straight victory of season

MEDFORD, Mass. - The No. 10 York men's lacrosse squad racked up their 10th-straight win of the season in an 18-9 drubbing of No. 19 Cabrini in the NCAA Second Round at Tufts University on Saturday.

The turning point came on a 9-0 Spartan run which spanned 21 minutes from the second to third quarter which gave York a commanding 14-4 lead midway though the third. The Spartans posted a second-quarter shutout as part of that game-clinching run with Jack Keller making nine of his 13 saves during that span. Ben Mayer led the Spartan offense with four points during their big run and finished with five on the day with three goals and two assists to lead the Green and White.

How It Happened
The Cavaliers took the first lead of the game on a Connor Herraiz tally 2:11 into the game, but the Spartans rallied back with goals from Brent Blackmon and Ryan Kazella 58 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead with 10:40 left into the first. Cabrini tied it up on a Dillon McManus goal, but a costly two-minute non-releasable penalty by Brady Rauner combined with a 30-second pushing infraction by Bear Evans with 5:04 left led to a pair of man-up tallies by Jack Grayson and Michael Russo. The Cavs hung in and gained some momentum back as they scored with three seconds left in the first quarter to cut their deficit to 5-4.

The Spartans dominated the second quarter on their way to a 6-0 result and an 11-4 halftime advantage. York limited Cabrini's offensive chances as the Spartans won the ground ball battle (9-3), held the edge in faceoffs (3-2) and held the Cavs to a 5-for-7 effort on the clear. Spartan netminder, Jack Keller, came up big in the quarter as he stopped all six shots the Cabrini put on goal. Offensively, the Spartans came out hot with a pair of goals in the first 45 seconds by Vinny Facciponti and Ben Mayer. Russo added another man-up tally as he and Will Harnick scored 43 seconds apart to give York a 9-4 edge with 6:25 left in the second. Russo later punctuated the second quarter with a goal just before the horn as he scored in a quick-strike transition beginning with a Keller save on the other end.

York extended their run to nine-consecutive goals with three-straight to open the third quarter as the Green and White jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 8:57 left in the third. Mayer and Harnick sandwiched goals around a Davis Fisher man-up tally as the extra-man unit racked up their fourth goal of the day. The Cavaliers finally got back on the board with 7:50 left in the period which ended a 22-minute scoring drought and then struck again 35 seconds later to cut the deficit to eight. The Spartans stopped the Cavs on their next four possessions and scored three-straight, capped off by a Harnick man-up goal, to swell the lead to 11 with 2:36 left in the third.

The two teams traded goals less than a minute apart early in the fourth which capped the scoring for the day. The Spartans posted four more saves in the fourth with three by Keller and one by Ian Callinan as they stopped the Cavaliers on their final seven possessions of the game.
