Spartans Dance Into Quarterfinals After Eliminating Salisbury

York extends win streak to 10 with their record-setting 18th win of the season

LEXINGTON, Va. - No. 10 York women's lacrosse knocked off No. 4 Salisbury, 12-10, with their record-setting 18th win of the season on Saturday in an NCAA Third Round matchup hosted by Washington and Lee.

The Spartans turned the tide with five goals in the second quarter which they parlayed into a five-goal lead early in the third quarter. The Sea Gulls fought back and won the second half, but York's 8-5 edge in draw controls and Bella Garabo's five saves in the final 30 minutes limited Salisbury's attempt at a comeback bid.

#4 Salisbury 15-4

How It Happened
Both teams found success early as the game stood tied, 2-2, at the end of one quarter of play. The Spartans won the opening draw and struck first as Zoe Kluegel zipped a shot past Kaitlyn Hunsinger 47 seconds into the contest. The Sea Gulls later answered with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart, including one on the woman-up advantage, to take a 2-1 lead with 6:09 left in the first quarter. With less than two minutes to play in the quarter, York turned defense into offense as a Christina Vendelis caused turnover resulted in a Sydney Mentzer tally on the other end with 1:23 to go. The Spartans had a chance to regain the lead before the quarter's end as they won the ensuing draw control and put a shot on target, but Hunsinger was up to the task as she denied Kluegel on the doorstep.

The Spartans fought off a Salisbury woman-up advantage to open the second quarter with Bella Garabo coming up with a key save on York's defensive stand. York earned a woman-up advantage of their own just moments later and capitalized as Logan Ward finished off a feed from Kiersten Blanchard from close range with 11:44 remaining in the second. Alexandra Parker scored on the free-position for Salisbury to tie the game up, 3-3, 1:11 later, but the Spartans responded with a pair goals 1:16 apart courtesy of Gianna Huet and Kluegel to edge out a two-goal advantage with 8:11 left in the second quarter. Salisbury needed just 47 seconds to answer back, but York reestablished their two-goal lead (6-4) as Ward tallied her second of the quarter with 6:12 to play. Hunsinger would go on to deny the Spartans twice on their next possession, but a save by Garabo on the other end set up the Green and White with one last possession before the quarter's end. Blanchard made the extra possession count as she beat her defender one-on-one and whizzed a shot over the shoulder of Hunsinger to send York into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

The Spartans took advantage of extra opportunities throughout the first half as they owned a 6-0 advantage in ground balls in the first half. The Sea Gulls turned it over four times in the first half compared to just two by York as the Spartans held SU to less than five first-half goals for just the second time this season. The goalies combined for nine saves in the first 30 minutes with five by Hunsinger and four by Garabo.

York kept their foot on the gas to start the second half. Kluegel and Mentzer each tallied for the Spartans in the first 2:14 of the third quarter to extend the York lead to 9-4 and forced Salisbury into a goalie change as Gabby Dorsey stepped in to guard the net. The teams traded goals over the next three minutes with Salisbury scoring twice to cut their deficit to four (10-6) with 8:04 to play in the third quarter. Both teams went scoreless for seven full minutes until Salisbury's Erin Scannell sliced her way through the traffic and netted her second of the day with 34 seconds left in the third to cut the Spartan lead to 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Kluegel opened the fourth-quarter scoring with her fourth of the day 55 seconds into the period which ended a near 10-minute drought for the Spartans. The Sea Gulls answered back four minutes later on an Emma Skoglund tally as SU trailed 11-8 with 10:14 to play. The Spartans regained some crucial momentum as they killed off a yellow card and netted a goal as the penalty expired with Blanchard finding the back of the net for the second time on the day to give her team a four-goal lead with 7:39 left to play. The drama mounted as Parker scored for the Gulls on the free-position 1:35 later and Leah Vilov netted her third of the day with 2:33 left to cut the Spartan lead back to two goals for the first time since the second quarter.

The Sea Gulls won the ensuing draw and had a good look, but Scannell's shot found the right post and Christensen was there to scoop up the loose ball for York. The Spartans cleared the ball successfully which iced the game as they handed the ball back over to Salisbury with just 29 seconds left.

Up Next
The Spartans will remain in Lexington, Va. and take on No. # Gettysburg in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
