York’s Postseason Run Ended by Gettysburg in NCAA Quarterfinals

Kiersten Blanchard sets program’s single-season draw record with 117

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 10 York women's lacrosse team saw their NCAA postseason run come to a close in the quarterfinal round with a 17-8 loss to No. 9 Gettysburg on Saturday on the campus of Washington and Lee.

The Bullets set the pace early with a 6-0 opening run and never took their foot off the gas, while the defense held up their end by holding the Spartans to single-digits for just the fourth time this season as they punched their ticket to the national semifinals.

Kiersten Blanchard set York's single-season draw control record on the day with her four draw controls setting the record at 117.

How It Happened
The Bullets came out firing and started the game on a 6-0 run to take a 6-1 lead after one quarter of play. Gettysburg displayed superb efficiency with six tallies on just eight total shots in the first quarter and scored two on the free-position. Bullets netminder Gill Cortese frustrated the Spartans as she stopped three of their five first-quarter shots which kept the momentum severely in Gettysburg's favor. The Spartans managed to get out of the quarter without being shutout as Kiersten Blanchard sliced through the defense in transition with time ticking down and found the back of the net for her 48th tally of the season.

The Bullets edged out the Spartans, 3-2, in the second quarter as they took a 9-3 edge into halftime. Cortese continued to be a brick wall for the Bullets as she stopped the Spartans four more times in the second quarter on just six total shots for a total of seven saves at the halftime break. Gettysburg's Caroline Sullivan set up Gabi Conor twice in the quarter for two of their team's three tallies. Sydney Mentzer gave York a little shot in the arm heading into halftime as she scored in transition with 1:06 for the last tally of the first half.

The two teams combined for eight goals in the third quarter with five of those goals scored on the woman-up advantage, including four up goals by the Bullets who opened up a 14-6 lead by quarter's end. Gettysburg had everything go their way in the third as they won all nine draw controls in the quarter and went 3-for-3 on the free-position with Jordan Basso scoring two of them to bring her goal total to five on the day. York made some noise late in the quarter as Zoe Kluegel and Blanchard each tallied in the final two minutes to bring the deficit back below 10.

The Bullets did not let up as they tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter to out-score the Spartans, 3-2, for a 17-8 final result. Julie Breedveld tallied twice on the woman-up advantage to begin the quarter as Gettysburg's up goal total increased to six for the half and seventh for the game. Senior Anya Litofsky left her mark as she accounted for a Spartan goal in the period and Giana Huet tallied the second for York in the closing minutes.

Gettysburg will advance to the national semifinals next weekend in Salem, Va. where they will face No. 3 William Smith.
