York’s NCAA Run Comes to a Close at No. 1 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. - The No. 10 York men's lacrosse squad saw their season come to a close in the NCAA Third Round with a 22-7 loss at No. 1 Tufts.

The Tufts top-ranked scoring offense once again flexed their muscles as the Jumbos tagged a stout Spartan defense with the most goals they've surrendered all season. Tufts also limited York's 15th-ranked offensive unit to their lowest scoring output of the season in a lopsided affair on Sunday.

Team Records
#10 York 15-6
#1 Tufts 20-0

How It Happened
The Spartans scored on the opening possession of the game as Will Harnick capitalized on a Vinny Facciponti faceoff win. York turned the ball over after winning the ensuing faceoff which led to three Jumbo goals in a span of 45 seconds. Jack Boyden tacked on a fourth for Tufts six minutes later and York got one back with just under three minutes left in the opening quarter as JD Townsend registered his 10th man-up goal of the season to cut the deficit to two. The Jumbos did not let the Spartans off the hook easily as they tagged York with a fifth goal with nine seconds left to take a 5-2 lead after one period of play.

York grabbed the first goal of the second quarter as Michael Russo registered his eighth man-up goal of the season. From there, the Jumbos ripped off six unanswered tallies to end the first half and take a commanding 11-3 lead into halftime. Tufts limited York's chances by winning six of eight faceoffs in the period and when the Spartans did create opportunities, Tufts goalie Conner Garzone was up to task as he posted five saves in the quarter.

The Spartans generated chances in the third quarter as Facciponti and the faceoff unit regained some traction by winning one five of eight. However, Garzone frustrated the Spartans once again as he stopped four of York's five shots on goal. Tufts turned defense into offense as they out-scored the Spartans, 6-1, in the quarter, including three in the final two minutes of period to take a 17-4 advantage into the fourth quarter.

A man-down goal by Boyden opened the fourth-quarter scoring and led to three-straight by the Jumbos who extended their run to eight-straight. Ames Clark snapped Tufts' run with his 15 goal of the season as the two teams combined for four goals in the first five minutes of the quarter. Both team's tacked on two more goals each with Ryan Kazella and Facciponti each finding the back of the net for the first time on the day for York.
