#6 Sea Gulls Hand #8 Spartans First Home Loss of Season

YORK, Pa. - The York women's lacrosse team fell to Salisbury, 11-5, in a top-10 tussle Saturday at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans struggled to gain traction offensively early on as the Sea Gulls steadily built up a 7-2 halftime advantage and kept York at arm's length the rest of the way. The loss is York's first at home this season as they are now 5-1 on their home turf and 12-2 dating back to Mar. 30, 2022.

How It Happened
The two teams had the same amount of chances through the first half as they each ended with 14 shots and were separated by one draw control, but the Sea Gulls made more out of their opportunities with a five-goal edge at halftime. Salisbury shifted the tide in their favor with a 4-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter through midway of the second. Sydney Mentzer stopped the bleeding with a goal 8:34 left in the second, which opened the door for York, but the Spartans turned the ball over on their final four possessions of the first half, while Salisbury scored twice more.

The Sea Gulls cashed in twice with free-position goals to start the third quarter to take a commanding 9-2 lead with 9:24 left. After coming up empty on their first three possessions of the third, the Spartans finally broke a 18-minute scoring drought when Zoe Kluegel finished off a feed from Gianna Huet with 5:24 left in the third quarter. The Spartans failed to tack on anymore the rest of the quarter as they went scoreless on their final five possessions of the period.

Kluegel got York back on the board early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to five with over 13 minutes left and Bella Garabo put even more momentum towards York's side as she denied Mary Hanzsche on a free-position shot on Salisbury's ensuing possession. However, York failed to capitalize and the Sea Gulls struck twice 60 seconds apart to take an 11-5 lead with 6:59 left to clinch the win.
