#12 Men’s Lacrosse Bounces Back Against #16 Denison

YORK, Pa. - The No. 12 Spartans broke out of a tight early battle to double-up No. 16 Denison, 16-8, in a top-20 showdown on Saturday at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans used a 7-0 first-half run to propel themselves to victory after trailing, 4-2, in a back-and-forth opening quarter. The York defense limited the Big Red to a season-low eight tallies as Denison scored just four times through the final three quarters after coming out hot with four goals in the first 15 minutes.

#12 York 6-5

How It Happened
The two teams slugged it out in the first quarter with Denison taking the upper hand, 4-2, by quarter's end. The Big Red came out strong with a 3-1 advantage less than five minutes into the contest and managed to cling to the lead courtesy of a five-save effort from goalie Archer Darrach. The Spartans managed to steal a goal with Eric Burbank scoring with 56 seconds left in the and almost had more as they were denied by Darrach twice in the closing seconds.

York's late life in the first quarter spilled over and multiplied in the seconds as the Green ended the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead into the break. JD Townsend notched two second-quarter goals, including one on the man-advantage, as he now has four man-up tallies this season. The seven-goal was punctuated by a pair of tallies seven seconds apart with the second scored by Ethan Greene with a set up from Vinny Facciponti following his faceoff win. York racked up 21 shots in the second quarter while holding Denison to just three, while also winning the faceoff battle, 5-2.

Denison dominated the faceoff battle in the third quarter, winning seven of eight, but that success was neutralized by eight turnovers by the Big Red as York took a 14-6 lead. The Spartans made the most of their opportunities as they scored five times on eight trips to their offensive zone with Will Harnick netting leading the way with a third-quarter hat trick.

Jackson Shields netted a goal four minutes into the fourth quarter to swell the Spartan lead to 10 (16-6) and put the game out of reach of a Big Red comeback. Denison owned a 17-7 shot advantage in the fourth quarter and tacked on a pair in the final seven minutes as the Spartans rotated the lines down the stretch.

Up Next
The Spartans complete their three-game home stand Wednesday with a MAC Commonwealth matchup against Alvernia starting at 7 p.m.
