Women's Lacrosse Win Streak Grows to Six

The Spartans downed Mary Washington 14-6 on Wednesday in York

YORK, PA – The eighth-ranked York College women's lacrosse team ran their win streak to six with a 14-6 non-conference win over former CAC foe Mary Washington on a sun-splashed Wednesday in York.
The Spartans put together a complete team effort as they improve to 5-0 at Kinsley Field for the 2023 campaign.
The Spartans move to 8-2 overall while the Eagles fall to 8-6.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got on the board first as freshman Sydney Mentzer opened the scoring 2:25 into the game. The Eagles' Kate Blair tied the game just under two minutes later with her 37th goal of the year.
• York got two straight goals as Zoe Kluegel and Gianna Huet made it 3-1 York and the Spartans took that lead to the second quarter. York out-shot the Eagles 12-5 in the opening quarter and forced three Eagle miscues. York also won four of the five draw controls in the period.
• Mary Washington opened the second quarter scoring with a Molly Daw goal 1:27 into the stanza. The Spartans responded with three straight goals as Kluegel, Huet, and Logan Ward recorded goals in a three minute stretch as York's lead grew to 6-2.
• Mary Washington ended the quarter by scoring two of the final three goals of the period as York took a 7-4 lead to the intermission.
• The Eagles kicked off the third quarter with an Erin Steinberg goal in just a mere 2:14. The Spartans responded with five goal spurt that covered just over 17 minutes of play from the third quarter to the fourth. Teresa Matthias scored the final two goals of the run as the Spartan lead grew to 12-5.
• UMW's Caeley Terapane stopped the Spartan run with her sixth goal of the year but Jen Campbell and Krista Yarusso each scored a goal to close out the scoring.
• York out-shot the Eagles 45-24 in total shots and 35-20 in shots on goal. The Spartans fared well on the draw winning 17-of-24 while they also held a 23-12 advantage in ground balls.

York improves to 12-10 all-time against the Eagles as they have won three straight in the series … the game was the first meeting since April 30, 2019, a 12-11 Spartan win in the CAC Semifinals … York has won nine straight regular season games at home … the Spartans have scored double digits in goals in nine of their ten games … York's 45 shots were a season-high as they forced Mary Washington's Cailyn Tripp to make 21 saves … York was 0-for-5 in free position shots and that's the first time this year they did not record a free position goal in a game … York was 0-for-5 in free position as they came into the game having converted 21-of-45 chances for the year … York tied a season-high with two player-up goals … York scooped up 23 ground balls in the win and has notched 48 ground balls in their last two games … York had just ten turnovers, tied for their second-lowest totals of the year … Bella Garabo notched a season-high 14 saves, just two short of her career high of 16 … Garabo, the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week, has recorded 24 saves in her last two games … Garabo improves to 17-6 for her career … sophomore Gianna Huet recorded a season-high five points as she tallied three goals and handed out two assists … Teresa Matthias is now four points away from joining the 100 career point club as she has 83 goals and 13 assists … Matthias is currently 20th on the all-time points list.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they host #6 Salisbury in a non-conference contest on Saturday in York. The game will be the last non-conference contest of the year for the Green and White as their remaining six games will all be MAC Commonwealth match ups. First draw Saturday is set for 4:00 pm.
