Spartan Comeback Bid Comes Up Short Against Gettysburg

Bullets break York's record 12-game home win streak

YORK, Pa. - The No. 12 Spartans fought back from a five-goal deficit in the third quarter, but they came up one goal short in a 9-8 loss to No. 5 Gettysburg Wednesday night in another classic men's lacrosse battle between the two Route 30 rivals.

After York took a 4-2 lead late in the second quarter, the Bullets scored three times in the final minute of the period which sparked a 7-0 run that spanned deep into the third. The Spartans rallied to score the final four goals of the contest and had a chance for a fifth in the closing seconds, but Davis Fisher was ruled to be in the crease at the time of his shot being released from his stick.

How It Happened
Both teams took their time settling into the game as the score remained tied, 1-1, after the first quarter. The Bullets took the game's first lead on Ryan Cernuto's 13th tally of the season with 9:19 remaining in the opening frame. Despite out-shooting Gettysburg, 11-6, in the period, the Spartans did not hit home until Will Harnick found the back of the net with four seconds left.

After stopping Gettysburg on their first three possessions of the second quarter, Harnick came through again for York with his 37th tally of the year less than five minutes into the period. The two sides traded goals before a Ben Mayer tally put the Spartans up, 4-2, with 3:50 left in the second. York possessed the ball only once for the remainder of the second quarter as Gettysburg won the final four faceoffs which sparked a three-goal run in the final 48 seconds and put the Bullets ahead, 5-4, heading into halftime.

The Spartans won the first three faceoffs of the third quarter, but turned the ball over on their first four possessions and came up empty on their next two which resulted in a 9-4 Gettysburg lead with 6:13 left in the third. York forced turnovers on the next two Bullet possessions and capitalized on the second as Jacob Wilhelm found Harnick for his third tally of the day as the Spartans trailed by four heading into the fourth.

The Bullets came up with a pivotal stop early in the fourth quarter as they killed off a two-man disadvantage with Chase Morgan coming up with two saves during that span. The Spartans went on to mount an impressive comeback with four goals in the final six minutes to cut the deficit to one with 33 seconds left. However, the key stop by Gettysburg at the beginning of the quarter on the York man-up unit paid dividends late as the Bullets held on to win by one. The York defense held Gettysburg scoreless through the final 21 minutes and limited the Bullets to just three fourth-quarter shots and caused four of Gettysburg's six turnovers in the final period.

Up Next
The Spartans remain home to face No. 16 Denison on Saturday in a rematch of last season's NCAA Third Round contest in which the Spartans came out victorious, 16-4.
