YORK, PA – For the third straight season, the York College women's tennis team advanced to the MAC Commonwealth tournament championship match as they downed Alvernia 5-1 in the semifinals on Thursday. The match was delayed one day as heavy rains in York on Wednesday necessitated the move to Thursday.
York advances to face top seeded Lebanon Valley for the third straight year. York won the 2021 title while the Dutchmen captured the crown last year. The third year will be the final tiebreaker as the Dutchmen are heading to the Freedom side of the MAC next year.
The Spartans are now 12-5 and break the previous school record of 11 which was set in three different years. Alvernia finishes their season 10-6.
The Spartans swept the three doubles points to seize the early control of the match.
Elsa Oestermarker and
Brianna Rohrer rolled to an 8-0 first doubles win.
Hannah Sult and
Bri Serruto earned an 8-5 second doubles win over Elizabeth Danovich and Jullian Laughman. The Spartans won the third doubles win by forfeit as the Golden Wolves weren't able to field a third doubles tandem.
The Spartans made it 4-0 as
Eleanor Beck won by forfeit in the sixth singles match. The Golden Wolves got their lone win as Leah Bouchard won the first singles match by retirement to make it 4-1.
Senior
Morrissey Walsh made her final home match a memorable one as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 fifth singles win to clinch the match. Walsh improves to 15-2 in singles play for the year.
The Spartans will square off against the Dutchmen on Saturday. The teams are scheduled to play at LVC at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon. If the weather prevents the teams from playing outside, they will face off on Saturday night at 9:00 pm at the Hershey Racquet Club.
