Childs Notches 200th Win, Facciponti Sets Faceoff Win Record as #11 Spartans Secure Commonwealth’s Top Spot

Spartans hold Stevenson to a season-low six goals to clinch regular season title

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 11 Spartan men's lacrosse team claimed the MAC Commonwealth regular season crown Wednesday night with a 13-6 victory at Stevenson.

The game also held further significance as head coach Brandon Childs notched his 200th career victory in his 15-year collegiate head coaching career and senior Vinny Facciponti became the program's all-time leader in faceoff wins with an 18-for-22 effort on the night.

#11 York 11-5 (7-0 MACC)
(RV) Stevenson 9-7 (6-1 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans struck first with a Will Harnick tally less than three minutes in as the two teams played to an expected back-and-forth start. The Mustangs came out firing and racked up a 13-3 first-quarter edge in total shots, but only managed to put five on target and three were saved by Jack Keller as the game remained tied, 2-2, after one quarter of play.

A pair of three-goal runs in the second quarter gave the Spartans an 8-4 lead at halftime as the momentum shifted in York's favor at the break. Ben Mayer totaled three points in the second quarter with a pair of goals and an assisted Michael Russo on his man-up tally midway through the period.

Stevenson's Ryan Coleman scored back-to-back tallies to end the second quarter and start the third as the Mustangs cut the Spartan lead to three with 12:55 left in the period. Coleman's second tally would be the last goal for SU until the start of the fourth quarter while York went on to rip off five-straight and take a 13-5 lead at the end of three quarters of play to put the game away.

York controlled possession in the second half due in large part to a 9-for-9 performance by Facciponti at the faceoff dot and a five-save effort by Keller in the fourth quarter. The Spartans also owned an 11-8 edge in ground balls in the second half and 25-15 advantage for the game.
