Hot Start Fuels #9 York’s Runaway Win at LVC

Spartans ride momentum from 12-1 first-quarter lead

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The No. 9 York women's lacrosse team used a huge first-quarter lead to secure a 20-5 victory at MAC Commonwealth foe Lebanon Valley on Saturday.

The Spartans stormed out to an impressive 12-1 first-quarter lead and held a 17-2 halftime advantage to put the Dutchmen away early. Senior attacker Kiersten Blanchard collected 14 of York's season-high 21 draw controls as she matched assistant coach Nicky Clauter's single-game school record mark originally set Apr. 11, 2018.

Team Records
#9 York 12-3 (6-0 MACC)
Lebanon Valley 5-11 (2-5 MACC)

How It Happened
The Spartans won the opening draw and scored on their opening possession with Teresa Matthias netting her 23rd of the season less than a minute in. York had a 4-0 lead less than five minutes after the opening draw and opened the game on a five-goal run before LVC got on the board with 6:14 left in the first.

York pumped in six goals in the final 3:26 of the first quarter to swell the lead to 11 and get the game into running clock. Logan Ward led the barrage with a first-quarter hat trick, while Kiersten Blanchard and Zoe Kluegel also netted multiple goals in the period.

The Dutchmen got back on the board with 8:14 left in the second which broke up an 8-0 Spartan run. York out-scored LVC 5-1 in the second quarter, with Sydney Mentzer scoring twice in the period, as the Green and White opened up a 15-goal lead at halftime. The Spartans owned a 20-5 shot advantage and a 15-4 margin in draw controls at the midway break.

Each team scored just three times in the final 30 minutes. The Spartans limited the Dutchman to only three shots during that span as LVC turned the ball over eight times and managed only two draw controls in the last two quarters.

Up Next
The Spartans return to Kinsley Field on Wednesday for their regular season home finale against Stevenson.

York improves to 9-0 all-time against Lebanon Valley … the Spartans have now scored 20 goals on the Dutchmen twice in the last five meetings … York has now won 16-straight regular-season conference games and are 19-1 in conference play since joining the MAC Commonwealth for the start of the 2021 season … York's 21 draw controls on the day are a season-high and the most since the Spartans collected 22 last season in an 18-3 win at #24 Haverford … the Spartans have scored 20-plus goals three times this season while holding their opponents to single-digits nine times, which includes all six conference opponents so far … York's 12 first-quarter goals are the most in a quarter since the women's game adopted the four-quarter format for the start of the 2021 season; the Spartans have only reached double-figures in a quarter one other time (11 - at Eastern on Apr. 2, 2022) … Kiersten Blanchard now has three double-digit draw control games for her career after picking up a career-best 14 on Saturday; she also became just the third player in program history to have over 200 for her career (206).
