The Spartans earned an 8-0 six inning win to snap a four game losing skid

YORK, PA – The York College softball team downed Widener University 8-0 in game one of a scheduled MAC Commonwealth doubleheader in York on Saturday. Game two was postponed after a lengthy delay due to lightening and heavy rain.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got on the board in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Morgan Sauers started the uprising with a hard hit double down the left field line. Alyssa Harhigh singled to left to put Spartans at the corners with one out. Daphney Adams singled to center to score Sauers for the 1-0 Spartan lead. Kaela Fritz singled to load the bases but Widener starter Mikayla Fedele got a strikeout for the second out of the frame. Amanda Criss then had a long at bat and eventually hit a slow grounder to short. Widener shortstop attempted to tag Adams heading to third but it looked like Adams eluded the tag, but after a conference, it was ruled that Adams interfered with the fielder for the third out of the inning.
• York tacked on a pair of runs in the third as Harhigh singled to lead off the frame. She raced around to score two pitches later as Adams laced a double down the left field line for the RBI. Adams moved to third on a ground out and scored on a Bri McKeown RBI ground out to short for the 3-0 Spartan lead.
• The Green and White got a fourth run to lead off the fourth as Reagan Wolford hit a rocket home run right down the left field line for her first collegiate bomb. The Spartans got one more on a bizarre play in the fifth. With runners at second and third, Amanda Criss hit a ball to the gap in left center. Widener left fielder Jalia Lawrence made a nice running catch in the gap. Fritz tagged and headed home. Lawrence threw behind the runner at second to double up the Spartan runner but it was ruled that Fritz scored before the out at second was recorded as York was up 5-0.
• The Spartans put the game away in the sixth with a three-run inning to invoke the mercy rule. Harhigh had a two-run double with two outs and she would eventually come around to score on a Widener error to end the game three outs early.
