LVC Goes Deep Five Times to Take Commonwealth Series Opener

YORK, PA – The first-place Lebanon Valley Dutchmen used five home runs to down the York College baseball squad 15-1 in the opening game of a three-game MAC Commonwealth weekend series. The Dutchmen scored multiple runs in three different innings including a sixth-run fifth that put the game away.

How It Happened
• The Dutchmen wasted little time in jumping on top of the Spartans in the first inning. Pete Botbyl led off with a sharp single to right. Nico Santoro blasted a two-run homer to left to quickly put LVC up 2-0. After a pop up, a single and a strikeout, Dave Mangold launched a two-run blast to left, pushing the lead to 4-0 after a half-inning of play.
• In the second, Botbyl added to the lead with an opposite field home run to left, making it 5-0 Dutchmen through an inning and a half.
• While the Dutchmen's offense was clicking the Spartans were struggling. York got lead-off single from Lucas Prendergast in the third. He moved to second on a ground out and to third on a fly out to center but was stranded at third to end the inning. York would register just two hits through three innings.
• The top of the fifth started off innocently enough with a fly out to right and a pop up to short. Then the wheels came off for the Green and White. The Dutchmen got a run on a wild pitch then another two-run homer from Mangold to make it 8-0. A two-run Spartan error increased the lead to 10-0 and the Dutchmen added another run on a Santoro RBI double. The Dutchmen got six runs on five hits with three errors and left the bases loaded in the inning.
• The Dutchmen continued to pour it on in the top of the eighth as Andrew Miles hit a two-out, three run homer to left for a 14-0 lead.
• York broke up the shutout in the eighth with the help of the LVC defense. Robby Elzinga singled and moved to second on a Gabe Trevena single. Michael Tinneny lined out to center and Elzinga moved to third. Trevena headed to second on the play and the Dutchmen airmailed the throw attempting to nail Trevena, allowing Elzinga to trot home with York's lone run.
• LVC closed out the scoring in the ninth as they scored on a wild pitch to provide for the final 15-1 score.
