Baseball Earns Saturday Split at Lebanon Valley

York dropped a 2-1 decision in the opener and earned a 6-4 win in the nightcap

ANNVILLE, PA – The York College baseball team salvaged a Saturday split in a key MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at first place Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA.
The Dutchmen won game one 2-1 after earning a 15-1 win in Friday's series opener. The Spartans bounced back and earned a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Game two was halted after five complete innings due to the thunderstorms moving through the state of Pennsylvania.

How It Happened
• After a game that featured 16 runs on Friday afternoon, Saturday's opener was far less offensive. The first inning and a half were quiet before the Dutchmen struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Much like Friday, the two runs came on a Logan Brewer two run shot to right center. Dave Mangold, who walked with one out in the inning, came home on Brewer's blast, LVC's sixth bomb of the series.
• Spartan starter Brandon Purdy settled in as he set down seven straight. The Dutchmen loaded the bases in the fifth but Purdy got a twin killing to extricate himself from the jam.
• The Spartans finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Gabe Trevena started off the inning with a one-out single up the middle. He moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a Jacob Deimling double to right. Deimling moved to third on a ground out but reliever Hunter Tipton got a pop out to end the game as he earned his first save of the year.

How It Happened
• For the first time in the series, the Spartans scored first as they got a pair of runs in the second. Michael Tinneny started the rally with a two-out single to left. Chris Betler then blasted a two-run homer to left center to give York the 2-0 lead.
• The Dutchmen got one run back in the bottom of the second as Logan Brewer homered to right center for his second home run on the day.
• York added to their lead in the third as Lucas Prendergast started the inning with a single. Gabe Trevena reached on an error as Prendergast moved to second. Robby Elzinga ripped a double to center, scoring Prendergast and Trevena as the York lead grew to 4-1. Jacob Deimling made it 5-1 with an RBI single to left to score Elzinga for the Spartans.
• The Dutchmen answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the third, cutting the Spartan lead to 5-4. Pete Botbyl had an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 5-2. A Nico Santoro double and a hit batter followed by a balk put Dutchmen at second and third. Brewer then singled to center to score the pair for the Dutchmen.
• York got a big insurance run in the fifth as Trevena singled to open the frame. After a strikeout and a ground out moved Trevena to second. Deimling came through again with an RBI single to right to score Trevena.
• Ethan Kennedy came out of the pen in the fifth in relief of Bryce Shaffer. He allowed a hit and a walk but kept the Dutchmen off the board. The game will be called after five innings of play as lightening followed by rain would end the day early for the two teams.
